Washington, DC
– Ranking Member Lamar Smith called on President Obama today to help
American workers by reclaiming the eight million jobs held by illegal
immigrants. The White House called the jobs summit to address criticism that
the administration’s policies have not generated American jobs.
Absent from the agenda so far is any discussion of the millions of jobs
occupied by illegal immigrants. In the meantime, the unemployment rate is
over 10 percent and continues to rise.

Smith issued a statement today criticizing the administration’s
refusal to create jobs by enforcing immigration laws. He noted that
stolen jobs recovered from illegal immigrants become available to citizens and
legal immigrants.

Ranking Member Smith:
“With a 10 percent unemployment rate, now is the time for the Obama administration to stand up for citizens and legal immigrant workers. Now is the time for the President
to enforce immigration laws. When the jobs stolen by illegal immigrants
are recovered for citizens and legal workers, American workers will benefit.

President Obama could create eight million jobs for citizens and legal workers
simply by enforcing immigration laws. Instead, the administration has cut
worksite enforcement efforts. It is hard to conceive of a worse time to
implement such policies, but that is exactly what the administration has
done.â€
