Outrageous Day Laborers at Home Depot

This week I went to the garden center at HD twice...what an eye-opener! First of all, there were 10x the normal number of DL's because of the downturn in construction. They all had a lean and hungry look and they were a bit threatening, to say the least. I filled my cart up with plants and the minute I left the cashier, I was beseiged by 3 DL's trying to grab my cart and push it to my car. They kept saying $5.00!!! Of course, they couldn't speak or understand English...as I kept telling them to get lost. They trailed me all the way to my car and, as I was loading the plants, they tried to "help" me, in spite of my protests. I refused to allow them to touch anything, but they wouldn't leave! Finally, as I got everything loaded into the car and started to leave, they stood there swearing at me in Spanish and making obscene hand signals! I just raced out of the parking lot!

The next day I had to return but this time I sat in my car for a few minutes and watched the same routine happening to other customers; except they were preying on the elderly customers. I saw these customers reach into their wallets and hand them money...just to get rid of them! It was infuriating!!!

I marched into the store and asked for the store manager ,andtold him what was happening. To my utter shock, the manager just shrugged his shoulders and said "They have to make a living somehow! They're just trying to help!!!"

Well, needless to say, I am furious! I'm getting a posse together to demand that HD bans these disgusting IA's from the parking lot! How dare they allow these criiminals to assail customers! The manager should be fired for putting the well being of the criminals ahead of the well being of the customers, and I'm not going to stop until he is fired!

The barbarians are at the gate...and in the parking lot at HD!

Did you call the police? They were obviously harassing you and should be penalized for that. Home Depot better pray that no customers get robbed, or worse.

The only other thing I can say is stay away from any business that has a swarm of day laborers hanging around.

You read my mind, Miguelina. My neighbor is the captain at WLA Police Dept. and I plan to ask his advice on reporting this situation. Thankfully, we have our 'guardian angel' to help us!

That is frightening. I can't believe that HD doesn't have a problem with illegal immigrants harrasing customers in their parking lot. I would go over the managers head to the next level of management. And, I would also let the local police know what's going on. It sounds like these guys could be charged with harrassment, at the very least. This is a dangerous situation.

    AmericanMe,
Do you have pepper spray? If not why not get some to carry with you everywhere you go. If that had happened to me I would have used mine. Also if you have a camera phone use it to take pictures of them harassing you. It should be able to pick up sound as well.
Where is this HD? Can you get the address and post it here? I'm in Atlanta where there corporate office is and I would welcome the chance to give them a call. We don't have that problem here with the dl's but I can see the possibilty of it starting to occur here.

I'm glad that they didn't hurt you but the fact that they cussed you after you got in your car to leave is also unacceptable.

I can tell you from experience if you go on the website and email a complaint they will take some action. you can also follow the instructions
on the back of the register slip and go to the web page and complain.

Home Depot is trying to survive the building slump by advertising on TV
and trying to get women into the store. A note that my wife was uncomfortable going Home Depot because of the "day laborers" got me a
call from an unhappy store manager the next day. "just call me directly next time there is a problem " etc. He must have been unhappy with the call from corporate.

I did not mention illegal immagration .

I know some people that have had similar encounters with homeless people. They have been assaulted. I'm telling you, that is not a safe situation for anyone.

First Call and report it to Home Depot and give the name of the manager you spoke with. Document it who you speak with at corporate. When something finally happens, and it will, then you can show a reporter and police that you tried to prevent it but Home Depot ignored the matter and therefore they are liable and culpable.

I suggest Calling and e-mailing. The e-mail will serve as a backup proof for your report and attempt to put a stop to the harassment.

$5 for a few moments of work!!!!!!!!! Those people are not looking for work, instead they are panhandling and begging, which are often against the law.

    jimpasz,

    We were thinking alike.

For us to remain credible we need to avoid any confrontation what so ever. Let's inform Home Depot, and the relevant PD if we feel there is a law being broken. I think the more we remain composed, keep a coold head, about the issue the more we gain. We are not racists or hate mongers just citizens who want to see our laws respected and enforced.

    (

This particular HD is in Van Nuys on Sepulveda Blvd....a very heavy hispanic population. I usually go to the Marina del Rey HD, which is entirely safe (DL's are not allowed in the parking lot). It all depends on location, location, location!

It's apparent that HD does not regulate all their stores...if they were all run like the Marina, there would be no problem whatsoever! There are some HD's in bad areas where DL's break into vehicles while customers are shopping! It would be so simple just to hire armed guards to patrol the parking lots, but HD puts the customers at risk.

I emailed HD this morning and received an email back stating that someone will be contacting me in the next few days. We'll see what happens.

And, yes...I always carry pepper spray, but in this case I felt it would be unwise to use it, lol!

This thread reminds me of South Park's "Night of the Living Homeless" episode. "Spare some change?". It's only a matter of time before Trey and Matt devote an episode to skewering the OBL and their beloved illegal aliens/day laborers.

I haven't encountered day laborers at the local Home Depot, but I will no longer shop there because Home Depot encourages this behavior in other cities and because they make a point of hanging up bilingual signs in their stores.
