Group holds prayer vigil for Ryan to support immigration reform bill

RACINE - One dozen people gathered outside U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan's Sixth Street constituent services office Wednesday to pray the congressman would support an immigration reform bill presented this week.

The local prayer vigil is part of a larger movement to show support for the bill, said Sister Barbara Pfarr, a member of the Racine Interfaith Coalition. She said other groups prayed in front of representatives' offices in Milwaukee, and that there are events scheduled in Kenosha, Appleton, Green Bay and throughout the country.

The bill presented by U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., seeks to legalize undocumented immigrants by requiring them to register with the federal government, pay a $500 fine for each adult, learn English, pass background checks and meet other requirements. They would then become eligible for a six-year visa and, when that was done, a green card.

Reform also means tougher penalties for employers who hire illegal workers, rules requiring foreign investors given U.S. visas to create jobs here and restrictions on hiring foreign workers.

"We're here to support that legislation and pray Rep. Ryan works hard for immigrant justice," Pfarr said.

Roberto Fuentes, a deacon at Cristo Rey Parish, said they are asking again for Ryan to support and approve immigration reform.

"We've been waiting for such a long time for Congress to take action," he said.

The failure of our nation’s immigration policy is both a national security issue and an economic issue. We must secure our border, create an enforceable system for verifying the identity of workers, and oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants. Legal immigration strengthens our country and we must work toward a system that is fair and effective.

Looks like he's also opposed to the health care boondoggle.

Ryan has career and recent grades of F- on amnesties (with an overall grade of C) from Numbers.
