Poll: Latino voters increasingly support Obama

President Barack Obama seems to have fallen short on economic and immigration promises he made to Latino voters before he was elected.

Still, his approval ratings among Latino voters increased to 70 percent after falling as low as 57 percent in June 2010 in a Gallup poll, according to La Opinión.

The Spanish-language newspaper cited a poll conducted by its parent company ImpreMedia and Latino Decisions, a research group that focuses on issues facing Latinos.

In 2008, Obama garnered 67 percent of the Latino votes, according to La Opinión. The same poll also concluded that Latino voters would not automatically vote for Obama. Only about 43 percent said they would vote for him next year.

"There is no doubt that Obama has the ability to win the Latino vote, and he still has solid support within the community,'' Matt Barreto, a political science professor at the University of Washington, told La Opinión. "But when it comes to whether they will vote for him for sure, Latinos show a margin of doubt."

Barreto is also a pollster for Latino Decisions.

During his campaign Obama promised some sort of immigration reform that would legalize the millions here illegally and passage of the DREAM Act, which grants some students and military hopefuls a pathway to legal residency. Neither has happened.

The same poll also found that only 9 percent of Latino voters said they would vote for a Republican candidate. Another 8 percent said they might vote for a GOP candidate.

"I think the most interesting story here is how badly the Republicans are faring with Latinos," Gary Segura, a political science professor at Stanford University, told La Opinión. "It is as if Latinos are not pro-Democrat, but rather anti-Republican."

Five hundred Latino voters were polled in January and February 2011 in 21 states where 95 percent of registered Latino voters live. The margin of error is +/-4.38 percent.

Michelle Obama urges Latino community to pressure GOP to back immigration bill

First Lady Michelle Obama called on the Latino community to put pressure on Republicans to support comprehensive immigration legislation.

In an interview with Univision, the first lady said President Obama wanted to pass immigration legislation, but could not find enough support among Republicans to move a bill.

The DREAM Act, a bill to give undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children and are pursuing higher education an opportunity to become U.S. citizens, had little support among Republicans, she said. The latest attempt to pass the legislation failed in December.

“So I urge the Latino community, he needs help, he's got to have Republicans and Democrats in Congress who are going to step up,â€

I'd bet if you checked each poller who's hispanic... make sure they are a citizen and don't have illegal family or parents. Those who don't would probably be on the side of enforcement more. Can't exactly count those who have a personal stake in a crime to give a fair and honest polling for a racial group.

I totally agree. This poll is completely bias.

Do they really think we're that stupid?
If you run a poll in an ALL illegal alien community, about whether illegals should get Amnesty, and you'll come out with a 100% yes poll.....doh!

That would be considered a "conflict of interest", when a person looks at one side of the issue for other reasons than the reason intended.

Its a really simple no brainer

The majority of them will always support the Dems , the dems offer them all the freebies and keep waving the amnesty in front of them , Its not rocket science to know that a huge majority of legal hispanics favor amnesty

The repubs for the most part don't support amnesty or the give aways to illegals

Nothing to see here , move along
