The thing is....how are you ever going to know if someone you now trust to do the right thing has in fact got their own agenda and isn't above screwing those who trust him to get what he wants IF you go to lengths like this to protect your guy from fault or blame? What IF Segal is really a guy with anti-illegal views and is a pal of Arpaiao's AND also happens to be a skinhound? What IF Arpaio was bought out for a billion (with a B!)cool ones by a drug cartel? How would you ever defend against that possinbility, however remote, if you go to such extraordinary lengths to fabricate a defense for something that hasn't even happened?

This kind of deference and blind trust in those seen as leaders or spokesman of ones own passionatley held views, is to display classic authoritarianism. It is extremely dangerous because it makes people extremely vulnerable to people who know what others want to say and hear and so give it to them in doses that lull them into allowing a populist dictatorship to supplant a democratic nations using nothing more than promises like "just until the danger's over and I've put things back in order".
