Immigration Debate Reignites At Irving Rally

More On The Immigration Debate In North Texas

    Jay Gormley
    Reporting

(CBS 11 News) IRVING A new chapter is about to begin in the immigration debate.

Nearly 1,000 people gathered in front of Irving City Hall to protest the city's policy on illegal immigrants Wednesday night.

"I have come here to tell you that the day is over in Irving where Hispanics can be disregarded," Anthony Bond, Local NAACP, said to the crowd.

What started out as a peaceful rally, quickly escalated to a war of words.

Victor Acosta, who came to protest the policy, argued with a supporter. Then he says the other man "looked at me in anger and grabbed me by the neck."

Hispanic leaders are upset over a policy being enforced by the City of Irving. The police department is checking to see if inmates being held in the city's jail are illegal immigrants. If they are, police are turning them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation.

It's a policy several people turned out to support.

"You won't have no fear if you obey the laws of the United States!" screamed a protester.

Opponents claim that police aren't going after serious criminals, but conducting racial profiling and deporting illegal immigrants for minor traffic violations.

"We are not going anywhere," said Hispanic activist Hector Flores. "We are staying here in Irving!"

Two people at the rally were arrested and three people were treated for minor injuries.

"I think that as an American citizen, I have no rights in America!" said a woman who was arrested.

Officials with the City of Irving said no matter who gets stopped by police - if you don't have a driver's license, insurance and can't prove who you are - you're going to jail. Leaders also said it is not the job of the city to deport illegal immigrants - that decision is made by ICE.

Irving police say they do not discriminate. Once someone has been arrested, even for a minor infraction, Congress has given them the right to check their legal status.

Since May, ICE officials confirm that 600 Irving inmates have been identified for deportation. Over the last two years, more than 2,000 inmates have been identified for deportation, city officials say.

Do you think there is a racial profiling problem in Irving?
    Yes No I don't know
Your vote has been counted, thank you for voting.

IRVING -- Shouting matches and a few scuffles punctuated a boisterous demonstration Wednesday against the city's Criminal Alien Program, which has led to more than 1,000 deportations this year.

About two dozen counterdemonstrators waded into a crowd of thousands at City Hall. Soon people were screaming at each other, and police escorted some counterprotesters away.

Sgt. Jack Page said two counterprotesters, a brother and sister in their 60s, were arrested on suspicion of assault. He said one scratched a demonstrator and another grabbed a demonstrator by the throat.

Carlos Quintanilla organized the protest against the police program, in which officials screen all inmates for possible referral to federal immigration authorities. He urged the crowd to boycott Irving businesses and to call the mayor to demand an end to deportations.

About 2,000 people formed a ring around him. Fierce arguments erupted in their ranks, mostly breaking down along Anglo-Hispanic lines.

"Hey let's chant, 'Don't break the law' because they're chanting something in Spanish," one counterprotester told others in his vastly outnumbered group.

They started the chant but were soon drowned out by loud boos.

One woman reached up and tried to swat down a pro-Irving sign. When police escorted a few of counterprotesters away, a demonstrator yelled, "Fuera! Fuera!" or "Out! Out!" in Spanish.

That chant soon became a mantra of the night as more were escorted away.

One man turned and gave the demonstrators the finger as police took him out of the crowd. Others stood their ground and argued face-to-face at length.

    Racial profiling alleged

According to Irving police, 1,373 people have been turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, this year, leading the Mexican and Salvadoran consulates and Hispanic activists to cry foul and accuse the city of racial profiling.

Only about four illegal immigrants were identified in the city jail a month before the Criminal Alien Program began in September 2006, according to information Police Chief Larry Boyd gave the City Council.

About 52 a month were being identified when the program started, and up to 130 were identified per month by April, according to the chief. Mayor Herbert Gears said up to 300 a month have been identified in recent months.

City and police officials have denied that they are engaging in racial profiling and said that all people arrested in the city are screened for possible referral to ICE when they are booked into jail.

Gears said most of the people turned over to ICE were arrested on suspicion of driving without licenses. Quintanilla and other activists said Hispanics and their neighborhoods are being targeted.

Demonstrators echoed his sentiments with cheers and signs. "I feel the Irving police are making a huge mistake with racially profiling Hispanic people here," said Stacey Ponce, 22, of Irving. "I know people who have been stopped for like a broken headlight or something, and then they're taken to jail." Counterprotesters argued that the policy has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the law. "Let's take the focus off of racism," said John Spencer, a 35-year-old counterprotester from Irving. "And let's not forget what the word illegal means. That's what my point was from the beginning."

Some here even predicted that this would turn violent once the nation awoke to the fact that it was being abused. It will get worse before it get's better. But DO NOT RELENT. This is our home and every square inch of it is worth fighting for.

You can respond to the video. The responses there so far are not good for our side.

It will get much worse. We have suffered the violent nature of illegal aliens in doses, thru their irreverance of law, murders, rape, theft, nationalism, expressed love for terrorism and even plain old fashioned violence.

These folk are a volatile combination of hateful concepts. They have been injected with a sense of entitlement that transcends even the most extreme of case of logic. These people are not a patriot class, as they do not care about the problems at home in Mexico. So much is their dismissal of corruption, they constantly praise the country and are proud of it, which means they do not want or are too cowardly to demand change. They are driven by greed and material gain. False sense of entitlement, endorsement by the President and his ilk, corporate marketing schemes targeted to them, history of violence and a culture of machismo, nationalism, socialism and a general lack of education is a powder keg of hate ready to explode. Telling them they are not exempt from the law, that they must be held accountable is like snatching heroin from a lifelong addict and telling them to go back to work. They mock us by saying we are addicted to cheap labor (its not us, its that some business are addicted to criminal labor), when in reality the illegal is addicted to a free ride and exclusion from our laws.

I see most illegals as mean and inherently hateful people. You will see much more violence. Machsimo, the new sharia law of North America, demands it!

It's a shame those 2 were arrested...why not sweep that protest and deport the majority of those whiners there? I say, way to go Irving and the other prisons need to follow suit. I'm sick of hearing about racial profiling. If you don't do anything wrong, then you shouldn't be worried about racial profiling. I hate them all. I've never hated anyone so much.

What's scary is I found this web site that is ran by our opposition(the criminal illegal invaders). This web site is pro-illegal alien and promotes the take over of our country by these criminal illegal aliens..They feel this country is really theirs. After seeing the junk on their site it will give us more of a reason to fight against these criminals! Anybody interested to see what we are fighting against, here is the link! It's frightening!
