Report: Cruz caves, set to endorse Trump

    By DAVID M. DRUCKER • 9/23/16 2:31 PM

Sen. Ted Cruz is set to endorse Donald Trump as early as Friday, ending a months-long holdout, according to multiple reports.

It's not clear what has changed. The Republican nominee never apologized for his campaign's attacks on Cruz's wife and father during the primary, and hasn't become any more conservative on key policies than he was previously.

Republican insiders say Cruz's approval numbers have taken a hit since the summer, when he went so far as to pointedly refuse to endorse Trump during a speech delivered from the convention, and that the Texan could be concerned about his 2018 re-election prospects.

Cruz was the runner-up to Trump in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. He declined to back his former rival on ideological grounds and because Trump attacked members of his family down the stretch of their heated primary campaign.

Specifically, the Trump campaign circulated an unflattering photograph of Cruz' wife, Heidi, and Trump himself suggested that Cruz's father, Raphael, who immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba, might have been involved in the assassination of President John Kennedy. Trump also had previously floated the conspiracy that Cruz wasn't eligible to serve as president because he was born in Canada.

Cruz, who cultivated the image of a conservative firebrand who doesn't back down under pressure, will likely disappoint some of his biggest boosters.

Steve Deace, a talk radio show host in Iowa who endorsed Cruz in the 2016 primary, predicted that endorsing Trump without anything to show for it would diminish his future presidential prospects.

"Ted is still one of the best senators we have. And I hope he's happy there, because odds he'll be president severely diminished," Deace said on Twitter. "I think it's the worst political miscalculation of my lifetime. I hope I am wrong. The people will decide that."

Several high-profile Republicans who initially resisted Trump have since endorsed him.

Ted Cruz does not deserve any gratitude after all the misery he caused to Trump when Trump was just trying to collect his due. We are going to see more and more groveling like this. Ted Cruz is afraid and trying to evade the reverberations of this.

Trump is not the only hope this country has in candidates for government. There is certainly a replacement for Cruz and we should start looking one. And a replacement for McCain. And a replacement for Rubio and all the rest.

I agree, pksk, but thanking someone for doing the right thing, regardless of their motives, is just part of my play book of life. We have our hands full to elect Donald J Trump, we need unity, and we need it now. We need everyone to set aside their difference, disputes and grievances and create an indefeatable army of Trump Supporters to win this election and get Trump to the White House. I don't care if they're disgruntled Conservatives, unhappy Republicans, dissatisfied Democrats, let down Bernie Supporters, or angry Black Lives Matter protesters, we need every person and every vote we can muster to achieve our goal.

Ted Cruz has done the right thing, for that I am grateful, and for that I thank him.

I agree. It's not over until its over and every bit of support counts. But on the other hand, I don't think expressions of gratitude are necessary for somebody like Cruz. Think about what role Cruz is going to play in a Trump presidency, Trump can't expect any support from Cruz, Cruz hasn't got anything for him. And if Trump doesn't make it, Cruz isn't going to amount to anything like a substitute for him.

A Trump presidency will do more for Cruz than Cruz is going to do for a Trump presidency. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain. He has not "done the right thing". Thanking him for a shallow display like this so late in the race is a show of weakness we can ill afford.

I don't disagree, but maybe it will make a difference to some of Cruz Supporters. I would love to see our party united and in the words of Donald Trump, leave the past behind, to move forward to a better American future for all Americans.

I agree that Trump will be a great uniter and I look forward to his leadership. But I don't think the Republican party or party politics in general are ever going to be the same after this election no matter who wins. Trump could have gotten this far without the Republican party. Maybe even farther.

Do you really so easily forget the abuse and subversion he suffered in his race for the nomination and the Republican caucus? This, despite the fact that he was winning the nomination handily by easily observable accounts.

And now, 5 weeks before the election, when it looks like he is winning, now Cruz is getting on board? Cruz should thank Trump for his efforts and apologize for his behavior. That wouldn't undermine party unity would it?
