Benghazi Fallout? – Two Libyan Intelligence Heads Assassinated in Past Six Months

Colonel Ibrahim al-Senussi Akila was the man who headed Libyan general intelligence in their eastern region. He was also a man who could have answered questions or provided insight into what happened in the Benghazi attacks and what decisions were made in response. He could have given us less-filtered information into the specific nature of the American presence and just what it was we were doing there.
The possibility of gaining any useful information from Mr. Akila ended last Thursday when he was murdered in the streets of Benghazi, near the Medical Centre.
An intelligence source reported “He was in his car when unknown assailants opened fire. He was hit twice, once in the neck.”
Another intelligence officer, the head of Military Intelligence in Benghazi was assassinated last December.
Colonel Fethallah al-Gaziri was murdered in late last year when he visited the city of Derma for the wedding of his niece. Derma is a stronghold of Ansar al-Shariah, the al-Qaeda linked group believed to have conducted the assault of the US compound in Benghazi.
The House committee investigating Benghazi could well have sought to question these two men, as they certainly had valuable information. While many people affiliated with the Libyan government are targeted by extremists, their deaths do remove one means of access to what could potentially be important information.
