RI school fired all of It's teachers, students 69% hispanic

Rhode Island School Fires All Its Teachers–But It Might Do Better To Fire Some Students

The Cato Institute has a posting on a Rhode Island school that has fired all its teachers, because they wouldn’t do any extra work in a school in crisis:

Rhode Island District Fires All Its HS Teachers
    Posted by Andrew J. Coulson

Performance, it seems is abysmal. The district’s high school graduation rate is said to be less than 50 percent, and things have been bad for a long time. Charged with turning things around, the superintendent asked teachers (who are making between $70,000 and $78,000 vs. the town’s median income of $22,000) to work an extra 25 minutes a day, provide tutoring on a rotating schedule, and have lunch with the kids once a week. The union said no. So superintendent Frances Gallo went reluctantly to plan B: she fired the school’s entire staff.

Union leaders seem to think that the old rules still apply. Maybe they do, for now. The union plans to challenge the firings and it remains to be seen if they’ll find a way to reverse them.

But America is reaching a tipping point after which the old rules will go out the window. Having more than doubled public school spending per pupil in real terms over the past 40 years and not seen a smidgen of improvement in outcomes at the end of high school in return, having become frustrated that we have choice in virtually every area of life except public education, Americans are starting to chafe. When an education system fails to deliver on its promises for generation after generation, Americans will ultimately throw it on the scrap heap of history, and find something that will fulfill their educational needs and ideals. Yes. We. Can.

Fair enough about teachers unions, (see The Worm In The Apple for more) but my question is [u][i][b]“what kind of high school has fifty percent drop out rate?â€

Anchor kids can't read or write In english

How many Illegals and anchor babies attend that have limited ENGLISH skills? Now we have come to the point where we fire "AMERICAN TEACHERS" because their students are not english speakers, and they cannot read or write In ENGLISH either. What Is our country coming to ?

Yet that is exactly what is happening in my home town. Well-liked teachers with years of experience were fired because they were not bi-lingual.

TRAL FALLS, R.I.—A plan to fire all the high school teachers in one of Rhode Island's poorest cities has angered unionized teachers but won some sympathy from worried parents.

The Central Falls School Committee this week approved a plan to fire every educator at its high school at the end of the school year. No more than half could be hired back.

Superintendent Frances Gallo earlier asked the teachers' union to agree to changes, such as lengthening the school day and having teachers offer extra tutoring to students.

Robert Rivera said he thinks the teachers should have agreed to offering students more academic help. His daughter will be attending the school next year.

Teachers are going to be stuck with low performing minorities, hispanics perform worse than blacks, accounting for income/background.

$70,000 a year to teach MIDDLE SCHOOL OR HISH SCHOOL??? And they want more taxes? The DREAM is gonna have to end soon.

The Houston ISD School Board approved a measure that will also fire teachers for low state accountability scores. One the chopping block already are over 400 teachers. Houston ISD is mostly a low economic, minority (majority Hispanic) school district. As an ex-teacher from Houston ISD I can tell you that the kids for the most part, when they bother coming to school don't bring any materials and don't come to learn. The parents could care a less if the kids are even in school and actually prefer them to drop out.

One time I had a parent conference with a kid who was special ed, LPAC (Spanish 1st language) and an illegal alien. He had been absent 37 times in 6 weeks despite state law saying it against the law to be absent more than 6 times in 6 months. The father said this was a horrible law and why should he be held responsible for what is kid does. He further said, through a translator, if his kid doesn't want to go to school that is the kids business not his. Mind you, this was a 14 year old.

These are the kind of homes kids are coming from and teachers are expected to get these kids in school and hold their attention long enough to get them to pass a state test. Otherwise we get fired. No one is help accountable except teachers.

It won't be long until our public school all over the United States will not be able to find anyone who wants to waste their time getting a degree to teach. why bother when you will be fired within 3 years only because parents don't take any responsibility for raising their own kids.

You would have to work 35 years in a school district in Texas to close to that amount of money. Most of our school districts here are 90%+ Hispanic. Thank GOD I only have 5 1/2 half year until I can retire.

    Bigtex,

They are caught between a rock and hardplace on that one. Parents aren't supposed to rear their young. They are to follow government rules and laws, or socialist services and the state step in and take them from you.

Too many parents use the system as a huge babysitting system, mostly because mom can't stay home to raise them.

Like anything else these days, too much government involvement

Illegal children constanly bring down the public school system. There are many good public schools in this country that are slowly being destroyed by illegal brats who have limited English speaking skills and anchor babies whose parents are criminals and sometime the criminal behavior. I watch the NBC World News story on this and they showed some white students who were upset that some of their teachers were fired. I bet some of those teachers are good teachers whose jobs have been made more difficult by having to deal with ESL students.

The Pew Hispanic Center came out with an interesting study a few years back. They found, that while other immigrants reach the high school graduate level in one generation, Hispanics are taking 4 generations.

That is important, because a high school diploma is the break even point. People with one put as much into the economy as they take out, while below that, they are pulling more out than they put in.

Now Hispanics are just as smart as anyone else.

So the terrible resutls have be a result of latino culture.

A poll done by our local newspaper found that whites and asians wanted to excel academically, while Hispanic kids said they did not , because to do well would be "acting white".

That being said, these kids are being boxed in by their parents. According to a Rand Study, Mexicans only averavge a grede school education. So the parents of many of these kdis do not have a clue.

The teachers need to step up to the plate and do more work with this kids, who are being prepped to fail by their families.
Take a stand or all there will be left to do is to ask the last person in the country we once called America to lower the flag one last time.

Sad to say that there's absolutely no chance that that will work - and for the reasons cited by bigtex, above.

Those kids are up against their own culture. I taught "failing students" when getting a secondary teaching credential. In my case it was blacks who were bused in to a white upper middle class high school. Absolutely refused to learn. Played cards in the back of the room. The regular teacher walked out and left that mess to me. I tried, but got almost nowhere. Good teachers - and all of the credentialed teachers that I encountered were good - can inspire students, but only if they are willing to be inspired.

A variation on your suggestion will work. The most important resource for any school in parental involvement in the form of emotional support for their children's education. Parents don't have to be proficient, they only have to provide emotional support. Several years ago I wrote to the members of the local board of education, recommending that administrators and senior teachers be assigned to meet individually with parents re the necessity of their providing emotional support. Got nowhere; am currently trying again.
