Ryan to campaign with Trump for first time on Saturday
By AL WEAVER • 10/6/16 12:25 PM
House Speaker Paul Ryan will campaign with Donald Trump for the first time this year at an event in Wisconsin on Saturday.
Trump and Ryan will appear together at Fall Fest at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in southeast Wisconsin. They will also be joined by Gov. Scott Walker and Sen. Ron Johnson, who is facing a tough general election fight, at an event slated for 2:30 p.m. EST.
The campaign stop will also come one day before Trump is set to take the stage in the second presidential debate.
According to a source familiar with the plans, Trump expressed interest in holding an event with Ryan and ultimately accepted an invitation to Fall Fest, which is held in the state's first congressional district, which Ryan represents.
Ryan announced in early June that he would vote for the GOP nominee, after he initially said he wasn't ready to do so. The two met over the course of the summer, including a high-profile meet at the Republican National Committee, and according to New York Magazine, Ryan and Trump speak "maybe every two weeks."

Paul Ryan will campaign with Donald Trump for first time at Wisconsin event Saturday, just one month before election

With just one month to go before the general election, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will finally campaign with Donald Trump, the congressman’s office said Thursday.
Ryan and Trump, along with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), and several other Badger State pols, will appear together at a fall festival in southern Wisconsin, Ryan’s office said in an unusually worded press release.
That release quickly made note that “Ryan will be joined by Senator Ron Johnson, Governor Scott Walker, Attorney General Brad Schimel, Treasurer Matt Adamcyzk, and Wisconsin State Party Chairman Brad Courtney” but didn’t mention until later that “Presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump will also join Wisconsin Republicans” at the festival.
The event, coming just one day before Trump’s second debate with Hillary Clinton, will be the first time Ryan and Trump have campaigned together since Trump was officially named the party’s nominee at the Republican National Convention in July.

The two men have endured a topsy-turvy relationship over the course of the bizarre 18-month campaign, with Ryan having only officially endorsed Trump’s candidacy in June.
Trump, for his part, refused to endorse Ryan against his primary challenger, Tea Party darling Paul Nehlen in August, causing fury among the GOP.
After intense criticism from many within the party establishment, Trump formally threw his support to Ryan days later during a campaign stop in Green Bay, Wis. Ryan was not present at that rally.

In addition, despite their half-hearted endorsements of each other, Ryan, the the Republican Party vice presidential nominee in 2012, has been forced to denounce comments made by Trump on nearly a biweekly basis.
Paul Ryan pushes back on Trump, calls Putin 'an aggressor'
In June, he said Trump’s comments about a federal judge not being able to preside fairly in a case regarding Trump University due to his Latino heritage was “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”
Ryan has also said that “a Muslim ban” — as Trump has proposed — is “not in our country’s interest,” said that Trump's use of anti-Semitic imagery on Twitter have “no place” in the campaign and that the U.S. “should defend our NATO allies” — a rebuke to Trump’s claim that the U.S. should only defend those NATO allies who pay for protection.

Meanwhile, a group of 30 former GOP members of Congress penned an open letter Thursday saying that they would refuse to vote from Trump in November.
“Sadly, our party’s nominee this year is a man who makes a mockery of the principles and values we have cherished and which we sought to represent in Congress,” they wrote. “Donald Trump … has proven himself manifestly qualifies to be president.”
The letter did not indicate whether the signees would vote for Clinton.
