Sen. Dole's first TV ad being shown today

Sen. Dole's first TV ad being shown today
    Wednesday, May 28, 2008 12:06 PM

    Staff report

Seeking re-election to a second term in November, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., began running her first television advertisement today.

The ad features several N.C. sheriffs, including Rowan County Sheriff George Wilhelm and Davie County Sheriff Andy Stokes, both Republicans.

Backdrops also include many Salisbury locations and, briefly, the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis.

The 60-second ad, which you can see at www.elizabethdole.org, focuses on Dole's work to deliver for North Carolina what her campaign calls "the first and only statewide immigration enforcement plan of its kind in the country."

Working with the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Dole helped establish a partnership between North Carolina sheriffs and federal immigration officials.

Under the plan, sheriffs across the state can access tools and resources, such as the Section 287 (g) program, which enable them to identify, apprehend and deport illegal aliens who self-identify themselves through criminal activity.

The ad features several sheriffs from across the state discussing how Dole came to them, asked what federal assistance they needed to combat the criminal illegal alien problems, and then worked with Immigration officials and North Carolina sheriffs to help deliver the statewide immigration enforcement plan.

The ad will continue for two weeks across the state.

The campaign spent about $500,000 to place the television ad in the following news markets: Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Wilmington, New Bern, Asheville and Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C.

The ad also can be seen at www.elizabethdole.org.

Meanwhile, Dole's Democratic opponent, N.C. Sen. Kay Hagan, D-Guilford, hosted a roundtable Tuesday with local sheriffs to discuss illegal immigration and the 287(g) enforcement program which trains sheriffs as deputies to immigration officers.

Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler of Cumberland County, Sheriff Dick Jenkin of Nash County, Sheriff Worth Hill of Durham County, Sheriff Hubert Peterkin of Hoke County, Sheriff Mac Manning of Pitt County and Sheriff Wayne Gay of Wilson County participated in the roundtable.

"I don't disagree that the 287 (g) program has merits, but currently, because it's only being utilized in a handful of North Carolina counties and because the federal government is not funding it properly, it's a problem that falls unfairly on the state and on the counties," Hagan said. "The immigration policies of the Bush/Dole team are just one more reason why Washington is broken.

"Of course I believe that illegal immigrants who are convicted of a crime should be deported, but the 287(g) program is not a comprehensive solution to our country's immigration problem — it's a Band-Aid."

Hagan said the Bush Administration has not made enforcement of the borders a priority and employers are virtually never penalized by hiring illegal workers.

Hagan said. "The immigration policies of the Bush/Dole team are just one more reason why Washington is broken.
Note how Hagan in the initial article uses the word "comprehensive." We all know what that means (amnesty!). Hagan doesn't know what she is talking about or is intentionally trying to mislead voters, like many if not most Democrats do when they publicly speak about illegal immigration (with exceptions such as Heath Shuler). I do not trust Hagan on this issue -- especially contrasted with the excellent record of Elizabeth Dole in fighting illegal immigration.

The fact is Sen. Dole strongly opposes amnesty (unlike Bush), and has an excellent rating from Numbers:

    http://grades.betterimmigration.com/tes ... VIPID=1078

Furthermore, recent polling shows that Sen. Dole is leading Hagan by only a few points or is virtually tied with her (in this anti-Republican, George Bush period) so we should definitely support her! She is a great fighter for our cause.

Carefully read Hagan's views on illegal immigration. My opinion: she sounds like another waffler who, if given the chance, would support pathway amnesty for millions of IAs. So we should:

    SUPPORT ELIZABETH DOLE:

Hagan finds promise, peril in immigration
    Kristin Collins, Staff Writer

RALEIGH - U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan on Tuesday began the delicate work of staking out a position on immigration, saying that she favors securing the borders and deporting criminals but acknowledging the need for foreign workers.

Addressing what could be a key issue in a pivotal Senate race, Hagan, a Democrat, met with the sheriffs of six counties to discuss a program strongly endorsed by her Republican opponent, Elizabeth Dole. The program allows sheriffs to check the immigration status of jail inmates and begin deportation proceedings. Hagan said she supports deporting criminals but called the program a "Band-Aid" solution that uses local money to solve a federal problem and creates a patchwork of inconsistent enforcement.

"We need an overall immigration policy that works," Hagan said. "We need a policy that is uniform throughout the country."

Dole accused Hagan of supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants and being soft on criminals.

Tuesday's sniping reflects the issue's heated nature, as well as as the close margin in the race for Dole's senate seat. Political analysts say that if Hagan successfully manages immigration and other highly charged "moral issues," she has a chance to beat Dole, the powerful lawmaker who has held the seat since 2002.

Hagan, a state senator, was once seen as a long shot against Dole. But recent polls show Dole and Hagan running a close race, fueling discussion among bloggers, editorialists and pundits that the North Carolina race could be a factor this year in Washington's changing political landscape. A Congressional Quarterly article Tuesday noted that Dole "may be hearing footsteps behind her" as Hagan has closed a 17-point gap to within 5 points, according to Public Policy Polling.

Tom Jensen of Public Policy Polling, a Democratic group based in Raleigh, said the group's recent polls show Hagan leading among voters who care most about the economy and war. However, Dole has a huge lead among voters concerned about immigration and moral values, capturing nearly 90 percent of people who list those as top concerns, Jensen said.

Those issues are keeping Dole ahead by a small margin, he said. Another poll, conducted for WRAL News, showed Hagan getting 48 percent and Dole 47 percent of voters who responded.

"Democrats are going to win this year in North Carolina on bread-and-butter issues like the economy and the war," Jensen said. "But the deficit is so big on things like immigration that Democrats cannot write off those issues."

But as a Democrat, Hagan must find a careful balance, political analysts say. She needs to win the support of immigrant advocates and those concerned that illegal immigrants are hurting the country.

Dole has taken a strong restrictionist stance, arguing for a crackdown on illegal immigration and lobbying for federal funds to expand the sheriffs program. With Dole's support, federal immigration authorities created a task force in October to figure out how best to use North Carolina sheriffs and police departments in the fight against illegal immigration.

Dole has traveled the state meeting with sheriffs, many of whom complain that people they think are illegal immigrants are crowding their jails, committing a disproportionate number of crimes and killing U.S. citizens.

    GOP: Hagan's wrong

Both Dole's campaign and the Republican Party went on the offensive Tuesday, highlighting instances when Hagan publicly criticized the sheriffs program and accusing her of changing her stance. Hagan's campaign said her position has not changed.

"Much like the pro-amnesty crowd in Washington, Kay Hagan just doesn't get it when it comes to immigration enforcement," Linda Daves, chairwoman of the N.C. Republican Party, said in a statement. Daves said Hagan's failure to fully support "a plan that leads to the deportation of known criminal illegal aliens is absolutely baffling."

Hagan struck a measured tone Tuesday, saying that illegal immigrants can depress wages for legal residents while acknowledging that some businesses need immigrant labor. "We want to be the best state in the nation to do business," she said. "And in order to do that, we've got to have workers."

She invited a mix of sheriffs to the meeting, some who supported the deportation program and others who expressed reservations about it.

Wilson County Sheriff Wayne Gay said the program seemed to unfairly target Hispanics for arrest. "When you start targeting a segment of society, and not looking at anyone else, that's when I have a problem," Gay said.

Pitt County Sheriff Mac Manning said most illegal immigrants in his county obey the law and value family and hard work. Manning advocated a path to legal residency for some, such as a woman in Pitt County who has two children and works in a "menial" housekeeping job that he said most Americans wouldn't want.

Some political scientists say there is room for Hagan and other Democrats to create a centrist position and neutralize an issue that Republicans have tried to claim.

Kerry Haynie, a political science professor at Duke University, said many people in both parties don't favor a harsh restrictionist approach.

"Republicans seem to be taking that far extreme position of just being anti-immigrant," Haynie said. "I think it's possible to have a middle-ground position that recognizes the contribution of immigrants."

    POLL'S KEY NUMBERS
A poll released this month by Public Policy Polling in Raleigh shows Hagan trailing Dole by 5 percentage points, with 43 percent of the vote compared to Dole's 48 percent. In a February poll, Hagan trailed Dole by 17 points. Here are some key numbers from the poll:

5 The percentage of North Carolinians who say immigration is the most important issue.

4 Where the immigration issue ranked among voters' top concerns, behind

89 The percentage of voters concerned about immigration who favor Dole over Hagan

One more story that illustrates why I don't trust Hagan on the issue of illegal immigration, e.g. looks like she's trying to find excuses against using 287(g) and possibly/probably supports new "comprehensive" (i.e., amnesty) legislation:

    Hagan softens immigration program stance
The U.S. Senate candidate says the federal government needs to fund it.
    By Mark Binker
    Staff Writer

RALEIGH — State Sen. Kay Hagan made an incursion on to what has been U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole's political turf, bringing together a panel of sheriffs to talk about a key federal immigration program.

The Greensboro legislator also seems to have shifted, or at least more clearly defined, her position on a program that Dole has favored.

Hagan, a Greensboro Democrat, is running to unseat Dole, a first-term Republican.

Dole has called immigration "the issue I've heard the most about" and has made federal immigration policy a centerpiece of her re-election effort.

During the past year, Dole has been meeting with sheriffs and talking up the 287(g) program, which allows sheriffs departments to check the legal residency of inmates in their jails.

Federal officials and supporters bill it as a collaborative effort that helps get illegal immigrants who commit crimes out of the country.

Hagan, who has made critical remarks about the program during the past six months, softened her stance Tuesday
    .

"I've always said that I thought the 287(g) program was a good program," Hagan said. "My problem with it is that it is an unfunded federal mandate."

The state, she said, spent $750,000 last year to help sheriffs pay for costs associated with the program.

"I do agree with the program, but it shouldn't be funded by the state of North Carolina," she said.

Hagan previously has made comments that appeared far more critical of the effort.

"There is also a current program called the 287(g) program that Elizabeth Dole is touting all over North Carolina," Hagan said during a Democratic primary debate in late March.

"What we need to do is have the federal government use their immigration officers to enforce this."

The apparent conflicts between Hagan's earlier remarks and what she said Tuesday drew criticism from Dole's campaign and other Republican leaders.

"Kay Hagan has been against this plan from the get-go. Her criticism today continues that," said Hogan Gidley, Dole's campaign spokesman. He said that the federal government did fund the training and computer programs used in 287(g).

Left aside from most of Tuesday's exchange was talk of broader immigration reform efforts. Dole helped block a comprehensive immigration reform package last year that she said would give "amnesty" to those here illegally. Hagan said that she, too, opposes amnesty but cites the federal government's failure to pass a new immigration law as an example of how "Washington is broken."

During her remarks Tuesday, Hagan concentrated on the fact that sheriff's departments incurred extra personnel and detention costs as a result of participation.

"You could say that there will be local costs incurred for additional manpower," Gidley said. "But that's going to be done to prosecute criminals, which most people would say is money well spent."

Sheriffs gathered at Hagan's roundtable Tuesday offered mixed assessments of the plan. While some enthusiastically endorsed it, others said that smaller departments could not afford to participate.

Among voters, immigration is overshadowed by the economy and war in Iraq as a potential campaign issue, according to polls recently conducted by Public Policy Polling, which works for mainly Democratic candidates, and the nonpartisan Elon University Poll. However, among those who do list the issue as a top priority, Dole is winning them over in large numbers, said Dean Debnam, owner of Public Policy Polling.

"Different things resonate with different parts of the electorate," Debnam said, noting that Dole's lead among those most concerned about the immigration issue has not translated into a big lead overall.

A variety of polls have shown Hagan and Dole are locked in a tight race in advance of the November election.

Hagan will say anything to get Senator Dole's seat. She would be just another in a long line of open borders boneheads. I don't trust Kay Hagan any further than I could pick her up and throw her.

    Go Dole!!!!!!!

We don't need anymore democrats in NC offices.

Since Jim Black went to prison, the democrats haven't heeded the warning and are up to the same old criminal enterprise as before.

As far as Senator Dole goes, she needs to push harder for Border Security. What good is it to deport illegals when the border is still wide open? As we have seen, two weeks and they are back with new documents with a different name.

I support Candidate Baldwin! As Rush has said today, we need to get back tot he constituion and the PEOPLE running and representing GOVERNMENT. So why isn't he supporting Mr. Baldwin, a real conservative?

Would he say that Mr. Baldwin doesn't have name recogonition and can't win? Would he say even his endorsement wouldn't get Baldwin over the top? If so, then why does he claim Operation Chaos is such a success?
We need some major endorsements and we need to be calling Rush and showing our support for Baldwin.

    Let him know at elrushbo@eib.net

We need Hannity and others to get on board, they could make history and improve their ratings and finances and get millions more listeners and viewers by making a case for candidate Baldwin.

Will they get side tracked on all these issues like the war, foreign policy and use that as an excuse not to support Baldwin? Seems they will since they are hooked on the war and the military issues. But we all know closing the border and enforcing the laws is National Security. Do we want to close the front door and get rid of the crooks or do we want to leave it wide open while the political crooks make more laws to make it harder to identify covert terrorist entering the country while pushing for their open border policy? The terrorist could be any illegal and by not making english the official language and making it law to speak english, it just gives the terrorist an easier road to get here and and not stand out.
Thats why the open borders people don't want english the official language. When an emigrant must know how to speak, write and read in english it makes those that can't stand out, thus identifying them as illegals but when this is not the rule, those illegals and potential terrorist can go un noticed. Now you see a foreigner that claims to be here legally but can't speak english, they just say I've been here for 3 years, I've just came from California where spanish is the primary language. This is why ENGLISH must be the Official language and English must be spoken and written in any business dealings.
Unless we get those criminals & make them pay for what they have done to our country and the lawlessness they have sponsored, we are just another Mexico ourselves!

Elizabeth Dole is currently serving what I believe is her 3rd term in the US senate representing the state of NC. I can tell you personally, as a North Carolinian, Liddy Dole is MUCH beloved in our state. And from what I understand of her time ('91-'99) at the red cross, they- the red cross - were more than 3 billion dollars better off than they were when she took over.

The NC race for US Senate is down to Dole and Hagan. Do you REALLY want another liberal democrat in the US senate to vote for amnesty in 2009? I don't. And that's only ONE of the reasons Elizabeth Dole has my full support.
