Sen. Tillis (R-NC) does not support Trump's national emergency declaration

    Email response received today (2/22/19):

    Dear Mr. XXXX:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me about border security. I appreciate hearing from you.
As you may know, on February 15, 2019, President Trump signed the fiscal year (FY) 2019 Omnibus Spending bill, which provided funding for the remainder of the government for FY2019. Specifically, this bill included $1.375 billion for border security. This amount is $4.325 billion less than the $5.7 billion the Trump administration initially requested for physical barriers along the southern border.

Subsequently, President Trump issued a national emergency declaration in order to provide the rest of the funds he had requested to secure the southern border. I have repeatedly supported President Trump’s plans to secure our borders. In addition, I share President Trump’s frustration that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have blocked the reasonable and good faith efforts he has made to invest in more personnel, technology, and infrastructure in order to protect the American people.

There are unobjectionable ways for the President to transfer federal funds to be used for border security, including more than $600 million from the Treasury Forfeiture Fund. However, I do not believe a national emergency declaration is the solution. It wouldn’t provide enough funding to adequately secure our borders. The declaration will also face litigation, and most concerning is that it would create a new precedent that future President would undoubtedly utilize to implement radical policy agendas while bypassing the authority of Congress.

Congress has allowed executive overreach to continue unabated from one administration to the next because both sides are fine with it as long as they agree with the policy goal. While I agree with President Trump’s policy goal, I don’t believe in situational principles, and it is clear that this could result in serious consequences in the future under a different President. Please know that I will continue to have discussions with my colleagues to work toward a bipartisan deal that would secure our borders and make much-needed reforms to our nation’s broken immigration system.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Please do not hesitate to contact me again about other important issues.

    Sincerely,
    Thom Tillis
    U.S. Senator

Just got the same letter from him. I've contacted him multiple times about how illegal aliens have taken over the construction industry in NC , are working with fraudulent social security numbers , and underbidding American workers for jobs as they give 1099 forms to their employees. He does not seem to care, as he seems beholden to the Homebuilders Association, who I suspect might be donating to his reelection campaign. I'll not vote for him again, and hope he has a primary challenger!

I voted for him too. Never again! He is constantly pushing hard for more worker visas. Oh, and he is an amnesty supporter!

I read another article that reported Sen. Collins (R-ME) is also against Trump's national emergency declaration. Well, that's two Republican votes Trump won't receive in the U.S. Senate when the House bill reaches them.

    NO AMNESTY

Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.
