    Senate Resumes Debate on S1348

    (via CSpan2 11:35am Pacific)

View along live via cspan website:

    http://www.c-span.org/

(Then, navigate to lower-right part of page, and select the appropriate media /video player) and the corresponding edition of CSpan: 1, 2, or 3.
The earlier link I had posted here wouldn't allow a direct reference to that page from an external page - so I changed it to the above.

(I think the website version has a 5-10 sec. delay vs. tv broadcast)

    Harry Reid introducing...

We've been 'barraged while at home'.

    McConnell now speaking...

We've worked on some amendments over the recess.

It is a very significant leg. as we all know.

'It is the most sig. leg. we'll work with as a congress.'

Now clerk introducing other bill (lobbying reform)

So do you think there's any truth to the rumor that Reid/McConnell are going to rush this thing through without letting any amendments be proposed?

Hi Count. Are you asking me?

If so... I'm not sure. Several amendments have already been introduced, debated and voted on 2 weeks ago. I think their plan is to keep amendments 'out' so that the 'core' part of the Masters of the Universe bill remain intact.

I agree with your comment in the other thread that the House is the real firewall - so to speak - here.

Reid speaking on recent past history of leg. in the Senate.

(Nothing specifically in detail in immigration at the moment)

    Reid:

Brief mention of immigration-related issues (he's basically outlined immediate future of leg. facing the senate)

...Just referred to 12 mil. 'undocumented Americans'
    (blah)

    etc,etc.

Reid: Still speaking on war-related issues (Iraq) mainly.

Yes. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

I'm not up on the ways of the Senate, but I thought there was a way they could limit debate and force a vote on a bill "as is". That way, they could pass the bill without allowing it to be amended first.

I certainly could be wrong about this, though.

    Count:

There's a thread I posted about 10-12 days ago (sorry, don't recall the title) - but it is basically a summary of the history of the amendments proposed and voted on during the debate on S1348 (current bill).

If I get a chance here, I'll go track that down for you.

In short, only 2 amends passed -and they were relatively minor.
