UPDATE:15 arrests made in first hours of crackdown

MESA -- Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says his crackdown on immigration and other criminal violators in Mesa has yielded 15 arrests within its first three hours.

MCSO sweep begins Arpaio dismissed criticism from about 80 immigrant rights advocates who protested outside his agency's office in Mesa and accused the sheriff office of racially profiling illegal immigrants and Hispanics.

He says the arrests in this and three other sweeps produced arrests of people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. At least five of the people arrested in Mesa during the latest sweep were illegal immigrants.

The sheriff, who has said his deputies don't racially profile motorists, has drawn criticism for similar sweeps in three heavily Hispanic areas of metropolitan Phoenix during late March and early April.

ORIGINAL REPORT: Hispanic groups say they're prepared to respond to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's planned crackdown Thursday on immigration and other criminal violators in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa.

The groups contend that similar crackdowns by Arpaio were fraught with racial profiling. They are planning protests for what's expected to be a two-day sweep in Mesa.

Sixty legal observers working for the groups are expected to film deputies pulling over motorists and later interviewing those inside of the cars.

The sheriff's office says its deputies don't racially profile motorists and that it won't back away from the crackdowns.

The sheriff has drawn criticism that sweeps in three heavily Hispanic areas of metropolitan Phoenix during late March and early April were thinly veiled immigration patrols.

Mesa's police chief, George Gascon, called Thursday's planned sweep a "publicity stunt."

Racial profiling. When most of the illegal aliens in this country are Hispanic, a lot of Hispanics are going to get arrested for illegal immigration. Duh!

I am glad Joe does not back down to those who use the race card to prevent him from enforcing our immigration laws.

The bottom line is these people haven't a clue about demographics and they know that the majority of them are illegal or are wanted for other things such as identity theft, hit and run, etc. "Racial profiling" is just a term that they learned from La Raza groups who use it to throw an obstacle in the way of justice. Such people should also be arrested for an obstruction of justice, because that's what it is...plain and simple.

These whiners are ignorant enough to believe that because they are here illegally none of our laws apply to them, therefore they should be exempt from our justice system. This stupid game of cat and mouse or "You can't arrest me because I'm so stupid" is getting really old. To hell with the ACLU too. They are no longer relevant in today's society, especially because they represent all that is NOT AMERICAN.

Way to go Sheriff Joe. It's dispicable how our government is making it so difficult for people like Sheriff Arpaio to do their jobs.

Sheriff Joe is one of the few in a public position that has big enough bollocks to do any thing about these invaders.Just think if we had more Sheriff Joes in this country.

Too bad it's too late for Sheriff Joe to run in the presidential race.

    He'd have my vote.

Can we clone him for every city in the US?
