Layoffs at NBCUniversal Won't End Until 500 Employees Are Let Go

Job cuts that have been happening for months, including some announced Monday, are part of the parent company's effort to slash spending.

The drip-drip-drip of layoffs at NBCUniversal continued Monday with some New York-based television personnel getting their pink slips.

The layoffs are part of a months-long concerted effort by parent Comcast to rein in costs by eliminating inefficiencies and duplications among staffs at various departments before year's end, an insider confirmed.

For example, three weeks ago, NBCU’s G4 network canceledAttack of the Show! and X-Play, causing dozens of layoffs. Two months before that, about 20 people at The Tonight Show were let go.

Insiders say those cuts -- along with other job losses at the Universal Pictures’ home entertainment unit, NBC, Syfy, Bravo, USA, Oxygen, E! and Style -- are part of an overall cost-cutting effort that won’t end until about 500 people have been trimmed from NBCU’s ranks of about 30,000 employees.

Insiders say the job cuts are not yet over; nor are they happening across the entire company. Divisions have been asked to tighten their belts, but there are no mandates, people close to the situation said.
