Tancredo: It's possible to deport 12 million
But it would be better to fight illegal immigration by pressuring employers and securing the border, the Republican says.

Republican presidential contender Tom Tancredo on Monday said "it's not impossible" to deport the estimated 12 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

Such action would take years and would be difficult but could be accomplished, he said.

The Colorado congressman, however, argued that tougher border security and a crackdown on employers would reduce the need for mass deportations and encourage such immigrants to return to their native countries willingly.

"It's attrition through enforcement," he said.

Tancredo described his views on illegal immigration and other issues during a meeting with Des Moines Register editors and reporters.

Illegal immigration is the cornerstone of Tancredo's bid for the presidency - it's an issue he described as a "clash of civilizations."

He said illegal immigration and a lack of assimilation among immigrants here legally threaten the United States nationally and globally.

"I think we are the last, best hope of Western civilization," he said.

Tancredo said legal immigration should be curbed at 250,000 people per year to ensure proper assimilation. More than 700,000 were granted U.S. citizenship in 2006, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Tancredo said that people who describe him as xenophobic are wrong and that he fully supports diversity.

He cited his Italian heritage and its importance to him and his family as examples of his respect for ethnic and cultural identity. Tancredo's elders always stressed the importance of assimilation into American culture, he said.

"You can't have diversity as the only national character," he said. " ... You need something that holds us together."

His remarks came on the tail end of a weekend campaign swing through Iowa.

like i said before, I like Tancredo.... I just hope he hangs tough and gets his message out. Friggin corporations and media are pushing Guilani and Thompson , and Hillary "socialist" clinton and barrack "No experience" obama...

The reason we see these people everywhere is because 6 of one, and a half dozen of another.. they are the same and they will push the agenda that is set in motion.

Seriously people... If Tancredo drops out... support Ron Paul.. if ron paul drops out, support Tancredo.. if they both drop out, support Hunter.

We have to stick together..... The number of new voters is not really a problem.. we just have to get the already registered voters OUT IN FORCE!!!!!

TANCREDO DAZZLES DES MOINES

"This is our flag, pick it up. This is your country, take it back," Tancredo thundered at the presidential forum.

The Iowa Christian Alliance and the Iowans for Tax Relief co-sponsored a presidential forum for six Republican presidential candidates in downtown Des Moines Saturday afternoon. The AP reported that crowds cheered the loudest for Tancredo as he passionately spoke on conservative principles.

He is right, they can be deported. It was done in 1920 and 1954 with less recourses than we have now. We have the capablilty. And when it is was put into action, the majority of them left on their own.
Enforce workplace laws and they will leave because they will not have documents to work.

I agree with you. Rep. Tancredo is right.

Of course mass deportation can work. ICE can conduct mass raids at certain time, when the illegals are not ready for it, and then send them back. it is that simple. Just don't forget Elvira! I'd put her on the top of the list!

Tancredo's plan could easily work, if only given half a chance.
