Ted Cruz has decided not to endorse his state’s senior senator, Republican John Cornyn, in the wake of Cornyn’s recent vote to raise the federal debt ceiling.
Cornyn likely would have cast a “show vote” against the debt ceiling increase – boosting his conservative credibility by appearing to oppose the measure, while actually favoring its passage. Cruz took that option away from Cornyn by threatening a filibuster.
Yet Cornyn’s true colors were no surprise. An establishment-leaning Republican, Cornyn has now voted to raise the debt ceiling several times. He’s also voted to raise the minimum wage, reauthorize the Patriot Act, and allow warrantless data collection.
Cruz has also not endorsed any of Cornyn’s challengers, saying that his preferences is “between me and the ballot box.”
Cruz’s decision is a respectful display of deference to voters, FreeomWorks’ Director of Grassroots Whitney Neal told The Libertarian Republic. “By declining to endorse, he is publicly recognizing that the voters of Texas will speak tomorrow as they cast their votes,” Neal said.
Neal pointed out that 2,660 people have called John Cornyn and asked him to apologize for siding against Ted Cruz on the debt ceiling vote.
