Ted Cruz wins presidential straw poll at 2014 Values Voter Summit

For the second consecutive year, GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was the top choice in the presidential straw poll at the Values Voter Summit, one of the premier annual gatherings for social conservatives.
Mr. Cruz took 25 percent of the vote. Dr. Ben Carson was second at 20 percent, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was third at 12 percent.
Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania was fourth with about 10 percent, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky tied for fifth with seven percent.

“The Values Voter straw poll sends a message that values voters are looking for leaders who will say what they mean and mean what they say,” said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. “They are looking for leaders who will take clear, unequivocal stands on the challenges facing our nation, not nuanced politically correct speeches. This is evidenced by those who finished at the top of this year’s straw poll.”
Others receiving votes include Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, all of whom got about 3 percent.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, both of whom are considered to be formidable would-be contenders for the GOP nomination in 2016, received two votes and one vote, respectively, out of 901 cast.
More than 2,000 people registered for the 2014 Values Voter Summit, which is sponsored by the Family Research Council.
“Values Voter straw poll reveals that the path forward for the GOP to engage Republican-leaning voters is to put forward true conservative candidates who will unite conservatives around the GOP’s stated priorities of a strong defense, a free economy and family values,” Mr. Perkins said.
Mr. Cruz won last year’s straw poll with 42 percent of the vote, with Dr. Carson and Mr. Santorum a distant second and third at about 13 percent apiece.
Dr. Carson was the top choice for Vice President, with 22 percent of the vote. Mr. Cruz was second in that category with 14 percent, and Mr. Jindal was third with 11 percent.
