Aviation expert and retired American Airlines pilot Jim Tilmon said red flags were up long before the Nigerian suspect boarded a flight to Detroit and tried to bomb it on Christmas Day.

Tilmon said Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was on a terrorist watch list, but had a U.S. visa in his pocket and a powerful explosive hidden on his body.

Why he was allowed to board the flight from Amsterdam to Detroit is a big question, Tilmon said.

"A person in that category should be one of those who is separated from the flock and told, `We're just going to check out a few more things,'" Tilmon said. "Most of us have gone through that and yet we're not on any kind of list."

Tilmon had high praise for the crew of Northwest Flight 253 and the passenger who helped stop the would-be bomber.

"You and I remember it was not too long ago when passengers would be reluctant to do anything," he said. "Well, not any more."

The suspect should have been on a no-fly list and banned from boarding a commercial flight, said Tilmon.

While airliners are built to take a lot in the way of turbulence, they are not built to withstand even a tiny explosion, he said.

"To have what we call explosive decompression as a result of having an explosion go off too close to the skin of the airplane, it could wreak havoc."

Yep, Nappy is in over her head ... since day one. I was glad to get rid of her as AZ governor, but now, for the sake of the country, I wish she hadn't left. She did plenty of damage to AZ but it pales in comparison to what she's doing to the country.

Abdulmutallab received a valid U.S. visa in June 2008 that is good through 2010.
