If you would do a Google search on agricultural harvesting machinery or similar terms you would get a number of stories. This gist is that other countries, which have not had a large pool of labor next door, have been inventing machinery. Fiat corporation is a big player in Europe. China is doing it, Australia is doing it. Japan is, too. I have even read about raspberry and strawberry harvesting devices.

US technology hace been in a downhill slide since 1979 when the USDA abandoned mechanization research, leaving it to state universities. As of late, however, there has been renewed interest, it seems. Some of these big Ag Fairs probably have a lot of displays.

The cost of maintenance is higher than paying illegals. Don't worry, they'll find something to complain about!
