Too Little, Too Late?
Huckabee Backs Sessions on Immigration
Mobile Press-Register
Tuesday, February 5, 2008
By: Brian Lyman
MONTGOMERY -- Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said over the weekend that he would support a list of immigration measures sponsored by Sen. Jeff Session, R-Mobile.
Huckabee appears to be the only presidential candidate to back the plan so far.
Huckabee signed a blown-up version of Sessions' proposals following a Montgomery rally on Saturday. The proposals stress greater enforcement measures regarding illegal immigration.
Alice Stewart, Huckabee's press secretary, did not return phone calls seeking comment Monday, but the campaign released a statement from the governor in which Huckabee said he "shared (Sessions') resolve" to fight illegal immigration.
Sessions spokesman Stephen Boyd said the questionnaire would pin down candidates' positions on the topic.
"An issue like immigration, which is clearly on the minds of many voters across the nation, deserves to be highlighted," he said.
Boyd said officials with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign told Sessions' office they "were really interested" in the plan but had not signed on to it. U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., did not respond, Boyd said.
The Romney campaign on Monday told the Press-Register that the campaign believes the former governor "lines up" with Sessions' proposals, but that officials are still reviewing the plan.
The McCain campaign did not return calls seeking comment.
Exit polling of Republican primary voters this year has shown that while illegal immigration is a concern among some voters, it usually trails economic concerns by wide margins. In the South Carolina primary last month, 40 percent of Republican voters said the economy was their No. 1 issue, compared with 26 percent who named illegal immigration as their leading issue, according to CBS News exit polls.
But Boyd said it has been "pretty consistent" that immigration has been among the top three issues for voters.
"Clearly the economy is on people's minds, as it should be," he said. "But we've heard from so many people that Sessions is putting out positions the president should take."

I have come to believe our wealthy leaders know this however they simply believe they will ride the golden goose to the ground and make money while they can and damn the country, what other reason could there be, I refuse to believe anyone could be this stupid to put our country on this path to disaster, out of control population growth, import low educated third world people, outsourcing, nation building at a cost of trillions of dollars, indebted our children for years to come, killing the middle class. It simply must be greed and the desire for power.I'm old with many opinions few solutions.

Finally, sorry Huckabee, you have been dancing all around this issue from day one, terrified to take a strong position against illegal immigration. You had an opportunity to be tough on this issue and you squandered it.
Unfortunately, your inconsistency on this issue has turned me off to you.

It's ridiculous.
Any one of these candidates could have taken a strong immigration position -- they could have EASILY refuted the media and said that immigration IS the number one issue -- but they don't. They dont' want to deal with it.
This guy is a clown who even makes fun of his own SELF on Saturday night live. He's a protest vote, at best. Such a disappointment for someone posing as a right wing Christian candidate.

Yes, and now that he is all but forgotten, he is willing to say a little more, but never fully commit, to give the appearance that he is tough on illegal immigration.
