Donald Trump chided Hillary Clinton for her past support of a border fence, questioning her criticism of his signature issue of a border wall.

“If you look back into history a long time ago, look at what Hillary wanted to build. It was a wall or a fence or something," Trump said.

"I don’t think she ever knew, because I'm not sure she really understands the difference too much. But she wanted something built."

Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, previously backed a 700-mile double-layer border fence as part of the Secure Fence Act of 2006. But she has backed away from that call during her 2016 candidacy and repeatedly blasts Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, by arguing she wants to "build bridges, not walls."

She also panned his proposal for a border wall during a concurrent rally in Virginia, arguing the wall wouldn't keep out terrorist ideology from radicalizing people inside America.

Trump also said that the border fence Clinton voted for was never built because it failed an environmental impact study.

"There was probably a toad or a snail or a snake, a rattle snake, in the way," he said.

But Politifact found that while the law had been amended to remove the double-layer requirement, about 650 miles of fencing has been built.
