Trump expected to halt Obama’s program but allow some Dreamers to stay temporarily

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump is expected to end an Obama-era program that shielded young people from deportation, but he will likely let the immigrants known as Dreamers stay in the United States until their work permits run out, according to multiple people familiar with the policy negotiation.

That plan would allow Trump to fulfill a campaign promise to end one of Barack Obama’s signature initiatives while also giving the president a way to keep the pledge he made after Inauguration Day to treat the Dreamers with “great heart,” said sources on both sides of the issue who are involved in the discussions.

An announcement could come as soon as Friday, just days before a deadline imposed by 10 states that threatened to sue the U.S. government if it did not stop protecting people brought into the country illegally as children.

Advocacy groups that want to preserve the program are urging the White House to ask those states — led by hurricane-ravaged Texas — to postpone their Tuesday deadline. A delay would give those groups more time to negotiate, and it could give Trump the space to avoid making a major policy announcement while his administration is eager to remain focused on hurricane recovery efforts.

But the president is under intense pressure to move quickly to end the program — called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or, more commonly, DACA — from groups that supported his candidacy because of his pro-deportation immigration position and his promise to end this particular program on his first day in office.

“This is something that he has absolutely turned his back on the base on,” said Chris Chmielenski, NumbersUSA’s director of content and activism. “I can’t say it enough. He promised to do it and he has not done it yet.”

The White House certainly could ignore the deadline imposed by the states threatening to sue, and instead leave the issue to the courts or Congress. But his advisors are urging Trump to take the reins.

“He’s been advised that it’s in his political interest for him to be the one to make the decision to terminate the program because he’ll get the credit,” said a source who is familiar with the conversations inside the White House.

“And if it’s going to end anyway, why not take the credit for it?”

Trump, the most unpredictable and unconventional U.S. leader in modern times, could still change his mind but three people knowledgeable with the situation say the president is expected to act before the Tuesday deadline.

The idea of allowing the roughly 800,000 immigrants now protected by the program to stay for as long as two years under current work permits is supported even by many of the groups that want DACA scrapped. So long as no new permits would be given and none would be renewed, those groups see the reprieve for current DACA enrollees as necessary.

“It seems to be the most practical way to do it,” said Ira Mehlman, a spokesman with the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a group that opposes protecting Dreamers and is in talks with the administration.

That window could give Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill who are sympathetic to these young, undocumented immigrants some time to come up with a plan before most of the recipients lose their status, said a congressional source familiar with the GOP strategy.

After Trump was briefed on the issue last week by his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, who has said repeatedly that he believes the program is unconstitutional, the president was prepared to end DACA. But two Republicans involved in the issue said Trump had second thoughts and postponed announcing a decision as he focused on the deadly aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

“I think he’s genuinely conflicted on this and trying to figure it out,” one of the Republicans said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters Thursday that DACA is still “under review.”

“There are a lot of components that need to be looked at, and once a decision is made, we will certainly let you guys know,” she said.

“DACA is a very, very difficult subject for me,” Trump said in February. “To me, it’s one of the most difficult subjects I have because you have these incredible kids, in many cases not in all cases. In some of the cases they’re having DACA and they’re gang members and they’re drug dealers too. But you have some absolutely incredible kids, I would say mostly.”

The administration has continued to allow Dreamers to apply for the program and has even renewed their permits — at nearly the rate of the Obama administration — which has angered some of his own supporters.

    Americans for Legal Immigration PAC
dropped its endorsement of Trump in May because he did not end DACA. ‘There is no room for compromise,” the group’s president, William Gheen, said this week.

Advocacy groups on both sides of the issue have been bombarding the White House and lawmakers with calls and letters as the deadline looms.

“We will not be pushed back into the shadows,” said Cristina Jiménez, executive director of the United We Dream. “We’ll continue to rally and march to show Trump and Congress that they are here to stay.”

The 10 states threatening to sue, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, argue Obama overstepped his executive powers in granting the vast special protections.

Other states include Kansas, South Carolina and Idaho.

Another 20 states, led by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra urged Trump to refuse that request.

In an interview on June 30, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said that he would be open to extending the deadline past Sept. 5 if it gave Congress more time to come up with a legislative fix, saying he supported the intent of DACA but not the mechanism by which the program was put in place.

But officials at the governor's office in Idaho and the attorney general's office in South Carolina said late Thursday they have not been contacted about delaying their lawsuit.

The decision follows an internal battle at the White House on DACA. Some of Trump’s top aides have been pushing him to protect Dreamers and use the issue as a bargaining chip for a larger immigration deal but Democrats stand steadfast in their refusal to negotiate. Some Trump aides express similar compassion for the Dreamers while others fear opposing the popular policy could lead to backlash with voters, business executives and donors.

How about focusing on American dreamers, not illegal aliens. With all of the hysteria in the media now and the obvious pressure to grant amnesty, it will be interesting to see what President Trump does. Will he try to satisfy opposing sides through a type of compromise? It will not work. Give the illegal aliens and their powerful lobbying groups an inch and the mile will follow.

Day one was the day to end DACA. The President did not keep his word so it is not hard to believe he may betray us further. It doesn't require any more thought or consideration. You end it or you don't. Why not say that the DACA individuals need to look to their families and their countries for answers moving forward and that the American people through no fault of their own have born a tremendous burden in costs, in damages from illegal immigration.

It is time for the dreams of American citizens to be addressed.

Listen to me, it's time for all the little boys and girls playing in the DC Swamp to grow up, grow some spines, re-check your oaths of office, do your frigging jobs for the American Citizens who voted you into office, and do so without being "conflicted", "emotional", moronic babies over a bunch of people who aren't even supposed to be in our country, who are not our responsibility, who are not supposed to be our worry, and for whom we don't care one whit. Now end this stupid DACA crap, veto any legislation that tries to legalize the illegal, and get all these illegal aliens he HELL OUT OF OUR COUNTRY. That is your job, that is your oath, that is your obligation, that is your duty.

When a Commander in Chief and a US Congress declares war and sends Americans to their deaths in foreign wars all over the world, I would think those same people can send a bunch of whining, sneaky, law-breaking, thieving, drug-running, murdering, welfare-sucking, raping illegal aliens back to their lands of citizenship without acting like silly weak wimpy crybabies.

There is no "conflict" with DACA. There is no need for "compassion". There is no call for "big heart". You get these no good people out of our country and you get them out now. The suffering, loss, cost and damage these no good scum bags have caused our nation and people is incalculable. END IT NOW. VETO ANY FUTURE BILL GIVING THEM OR ANY OTHER ILLEGAL ALIEN ANYTHING, except a swift deportation.

Trump said today at the press conference "we love the dreamers". NO WE DO NOT, Mr. President, we do not love them at all, we can't stand them, now get them out of our country as soon as possible. There is nothing "incredible" or special about these people, they are loud mouth, activists, cheats and thieves who think they are above the law because so far they have been.

Deport the Dreamers and their ILLEGAL families once and for all.

Free up those jobs and seats in OUR schools for our citizens. Our schools are overcrowded and underfunded...get them OUT.

Let their President "have heart" for them and take them in and contribute to their countries success!

If the program is ended by simply blocking any further applications, 1,100 young people a day would lose their work permits and would no longer be assured they could remain in the U.S.

Trump, or the courts, might put DACA to an end — but the details are still unclear

If Trump doesn’t act to end DACA before September 5, a group of state attorneys general, led by Texas, are threatening to sue to do it for him. They want to ask a federal judge who already ruled one Obama-era deferred action program unconstitutional (the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans program, or DAPA, which was stopped before going into effect in 2015) to do the same for DACA.

The lawsuit would probably result in DACA getting put on hold at some point — though it wouldn’t be at all clear when, or how.

The Trump administration is reportedly trying to delay the potential lawsuit, to give the president more time to decide what to do with DACA. Because in addition to the question of whether or not to fight the states in court to protect DACA, there’s the question of howTrump would end the program.

And to DREAMers, the details matter a ton.

It’s theoretically possible that Trump could not just tell the federal government not to approve any new applications for DACA protection, but could revoke the protections and work permits for the 800,000 people who already have them — effective immediately.

This would cause utter chaos. Luckily, it seems unlikely.

It appears more plausible that President Trump will declare that people can keep their current work permits, but no new DACA applications will be approved — shutting out people who are currently 15 or younger from protections, as well as the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who theoretically qualify but never applied.

(Immigrants from Asian countries, for example, were relatively less likely to apply for DACA, either because they were worried about the government getting their information or because they simply didn’t know what the program was.)

That leaves the question of what happens when DACA recipients’ current two-year work permits expire — as they will, if unable to renew DACA, in the coming weeks and months.

Trump could allow DACA recipients to renew one more time — giving Congress a couple of years to come up with a more permanent solution, or simply kicking the can down the road. He could set a deadline after which no new DACA renewals will be granted, meaning that anyone whose permit expires after that date will simply become unauthorized again.

In order to satisfy the demands of the Republican state officials threatening to sue, though, Trump would have to declare that the government will stop renewing DACA applications, period. That would have the effect of ending the program over the next two years — with tens of thousands of people losing their DACA protections every month.

Trump needs to end it all in full immediately and tell Congress he'll veto any legislation to legalize.

    Simple. Very very simple.

"Love means never having to say you're sorry" especially when you've done nothing wrong.

Americans haven't done anything wrong, we don't deserve the presence of illegal aliens in our country sucking on welfare, breeding anchor babies, stealing our jobs, deflating our wages, robbing our kids seats in college, draining our resources, crowding our schools and sticking us with unpaid hospital bills. We don't deserve drug running, gangs, DUI's, shootings, robberies, murders, smugglers and rapes by illegal aliens either.

Americans are innocent, we have absolutely no responsibility for the lives or conditions, dreams or whatever of any of these people. None. Nada. Zero. Zip.

Now end this DACA Charade and Dreamer Farce and get these people out of here.
