Trump rally optimism is fading fast, Citigroup says

Trump rally optimism is fading fast, Citigroup says

Investors are increasingly skeptical of President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to enact pro-growth economic policies, according to a proprietary gauge of investor sentiment compiled by Citigroup Inc.

The News Implied Sentiment Indicator, or NISI, has reversed most of its postelection rise, as the chart from the Citigroup team of macro analysts illustrates:

    Bloomberg and Citigroup Research

The index aims to capture investor sentiment by measuring the number of Bloomberg News stories containing the keywords “bullish” and “bearish.” The index is correlated to risk assets, as well as Citigroup’s Global Risk Aversion Macro Index, or GRAMI, the analysts said. Occasionally, turning points in the NISI precipitate moves corresponding moves in stocks, they said.

The expectation that Trump would be able to follow through on promises to roll out a massive infrastructure-spending bill, cut corporate taxes, and repeal a broad swath of back of Wall Street regulations, likely helped spark the rally, the strategists said.

However, the index has swung back to neutral in the opening weeks of 2017. This suggest that the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.15% could retreat to around 2,200 in the near term, the strategists said. It’s presently trading at 2,266.

“Is some of the optimism fuelled by Trump fading perhaps?,” The Citigroup analysts said. “For what it’s worth, prediction markets are pricing in a 50% probability that Trump‎ won’t finish out the term in office.”

According to recent polls, Trump’s approval ratings have fallen since the election. Surveys from CNN/ORC and ABC News/Washington Post released on Tuesday showed a majority of Americans harbor an unfavorable view of the president-elect, Politico reported. Trump will be sworn in to office on Friday.

In the market, several popular “Trump trades” have reversed or stalled in recent weeks. Gold prices GLD, +1.24% have risen about 8% from their postelection lows, the dollar DXY, -1.08% is about 3% softer and the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.09% has retreated after coming within a hair’s breadth of the 20,000 milestone.

Trump rattled markets on Tuesday after he said a congressional Republican proposal for a border-tax adjustment was “too complicated.” He also said he believes more countries will leave the European Union in the coming years, and that the one-China policy, which counts Taiwan as an autonomous region of the People’s Republic of China, is up for negotiation. His comments were published by The Wall Street Journal over the weekend.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.40% was on track for its worst daily performance of the year.

    Hmmmm.

Really??!! On what possible probable scenario would that "prediction" be based?

It's a shame really that CitiGroup survived the 2008 financial crash. So many nice banks went down or suffered tremendously while this behemoth of money laundering foreign evil rides high. Such a shame that Elizabeth Warren wants to beat up on Donald Trump who never owned a bank while letting CitiGroup rise again. Yes, CitiGroup is the largest money laundering organization in the world. Ask Mexico, their drug lords know all about it.

Unbelievable. This folks will not quit. That's posted the 17th, three days before he assumes office. What other incoming president has ever faced so much political maneuvering and manipulation from the political opposition?

Like pollsters who are not really asking you what you think, but telling you what to think, these people are not telling the public what it expects, it is dulling the public away from expecting anything. They are certain that if they can lull the public into indifference, it will be easier to tie Trump's hands to prevent him from doing what he has said he wants to do.

It's a terrible thing what's going on. Never seen any persecution of a candidate or President-elect like what they've tried to do and are still trying to do to Donald Trump. It's so sad and unfair to do this to him, his family and his Trump Supporters. It's truly embarrassing for our nation. It makes our country look like one of those crazy wild-eyed unsophisticated third-world banana republics. We've been the laughingstock of the world for some time now due to policies, but now on Inauguration Day of the 45th President of the United States, the world will see it's not just the policies, it's a large number of people who live here.

Most of the world has not yet recovered from what was revealed during Katrina. It will never recover from what they're going to see and witness in DC on Inauguration Day. For the people of the world to see this carnage of rude, violent, loud-mouth, wild-eyed, self-centered, thoughtless, gravy-train of air-head protesters wailing and ranting against a President before he's even in office .... oh my God .... the image of The American Yanks who saved the world in 3 years and 8 months during WWII .... will be no more.

Of course on the bright side, they'll see our new wonderful First Family, one of the most extraordinarily competent and talented Cabinets in many decades, our beautiful Trump Supporters, the magnificent groups of Americans participating in the Parade, our gorgeous clean Capitol Dome that workers busted their butts to finish before this Inauguration because Trump said a year ago "why don't you just work faster and get it done in time for the Inauguration", all the security, Capitol Police, National Park Rangers, and police officers doing their jobs to keep things orderly and everyone safe and then they'll understand the two worlds at war with each other in the United States and know without question why Trump World won 30 states in the Presidential Election of 2016 and Donald J Trump is being sworn in as the 45th President of the United States to save our nation.
