Trump says immigration enforcement would protect jobs for minorities

TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would crack down on illegal immigrants disobeying the law to help protect the jobs of minority workers, as he seeks to widen his appeal to black and Hispanic voters.

At a rally in Tampa, Trump expanded on what appears to be a softening of his hardline stance on illegal immigration. He did not talk about deporting as many as 11 million illegal immigrants as he has in the past, instead saying he would aim enforcement efforts at people who are committing crimes such as overstaying their visas.

"Hillary Clinton wants a totally open border so people can just pour in," Trump said of his Democratic rival in the Nov. 8 election. "We are going to enforce our laws, remove people who overstay their visas, dismantle the gangs and cartels, and protect jobs and benefits for hardworking American citizens."

Taking strong action against illegal immigration has been a signature issue of Trump's campaign and helped him defeat 16 rivals for the Republican nomination. He has also vowed to build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico and have that country pay for it.

Nigel Farage, an anti-immigration politician who was part of Britain's successful campaign to leave the European Union - a result applauded by Trump - plans to address a Trump rally in Mississippi on Wednesday night, a spokesman said. There was no immediate confirmation from Trump's campaign.

But the New York businessman, who trails Clinton in national public opinion polls as well as in many battleground states where the election will be decided, may be moving toward the center on immigration to appeal to moderate voters and minority groups who have been disenchanted by his bellicose rhetoric.

Trump said on Tuesday at a Fox News event hosted by anchor Sean Hannity that he might be "softening" on illegal immigration to take account of those undocumented people who have contributed to American society and obeyed the law.

His new campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway, told CNN on Sunday that Trump's proposed "deportation force" for illegal immigrants in the country was "to be determined."

    REACHING OUT TO MINORITIES

As part of an outreach to minority voters, who opinion polls show favoring his opponent, Trump plans to visit some African-American communities, a departure from his reliance on white voters. One such stop is expected to be in September in Detroit.

One adviser, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, an African-American who ran against Trump for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, told MSNBC he would accompany Trump.

"There's no question that he will be in the communities. He will be talking to African-American leaders around the country in different cities to find out what they believe is important, and what they think has worked," Carson said.

Trump argues that many minority groups have suffered under Democratic policies, particularly in inner cities. He vowed to make cities safer so that "when you walk down your street... you're not going to be shot, your child is not going to be shot."

Such horrible reporting. That is NOT what he said. He was asked if he might consider "softening" the laws on immigration. And Trump said "we could certainly soften" then he's interrupted by Sean, then Trump interrupts Sean to finish his statement and says "BUT I'm going to enforce the laws, and our laws, most people don't know this, are very very strong laws."

That is not "I might soften", it's "we could but I'm not going to, because our laws are very very strong laws and I'm going to enforce them."

It's amazing really in 2016 how truly corrupt our media is. They're word masters or supposed to be, yet they can't get even one simple statement comes out of Trump's mouth right. The bias and corruption is so bad it's a sign these so-called "journalists" are sick, mentally ill, I guess with the fear at this point that all their effort to defeat this candidate might fail.

Again Trump does not give the constitutional answer to these assertions. As President it should not matter if Trump wants to deport all illegals or soften towards amnesty for others... what matters is the current laws of the United States! His opinion is not relevant... he nor Obama are emperors and if either think they are they must be stopped because America cannot and will not tolerate emperors!

The penalty for all illegal aliens under current US laws is deportation and then prohibition from legal immigration for a minimum of 10 years and that should be Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's enforcement plans unless Congress decides otherwise!

So far, Congress has decided again and again that those laws stand and amnesty fails!

So is the softening from his original position to enforcing the existing US laws for illegal aliens worse for this illegal population here in the US/ better for the US if Trump were to win and fully follow, enforce and apply (as he is now stating) the laws on illegal immigration?

Enforcing existing law means deportation of illegal aliens. That is the law.
