U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorses a Democrat -- what's up with that?

Tom Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is putting the business organization's muscle not only behind the Republican establishment in its battle against the Tea Party, but also behind at least one Democratic House candidate.

Here’s the political equivalent of a “man bites dog” story: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has endorsed a Democrat in one of this year’s most competitive House races.
Washington’s most powerful business lobby usually backs Republicans, but it endorsed Rep. Scott Peters, D-Calif., in his re-election bid against Republican challenger Carl DeMaio. Two years ago, the chamber supported the Republican incumbent in this San Diego district, Brian Bilbray, who was unseated by Peters.
The chamber notes that Peters voted its way 69 percent of the time on key issues. On some issues, such as avoiding a government shutdown and reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank, the chamber has found itself at odds with the Tea Party faction of the Republican Party. This battle has played out in several Republican Senate primaries, where chamber-backed candidates have fought off Tea Party challengers.
Peters told the San Diego Union Tribune that the chamber’s endorsement shows that he’s “the candidate that’s working across the aisles. I”m not just a member of one of the partisan armies.”
A spokesman for DeMaio, however, said the chamber’s endorsement demonstrates that Peters is part of the Washington establishment.
“We’re not surprised that a special interest group in D.C. is trying to protect members of Congress — they like the system the way it is,” DeMaio spokesman Dave McCulloch told the Union Tribune. “They know Carl DeMaio is coming to end the perks for this crowd.”
“Sour grapes,” responded Rob Engstrom, the chamber’s national political director.
In a tweet, Engstrom noted that the DeMaio campaign “actively sought our endorsement.”
The chamber has supported a few Democrats in past elections — for example, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who, like the chamber opposes President Barack Obama’s anti-coal regulatory push. But as of Aug. 19, the chamber’s political action committee hadn’t contributed any money to Democratic congressional candidates this election, according to the Center for Responsive Politiics.
The chamber’s biggest role in this election, however, doesn’t come from campaign contributions, it comes from the millions of dollars it’s spending on its own on ads intended to persuade voters to vote for or against candidates. As of June 30, the chamber had spent $15.5 million on such ads, and none of that money went to support Democrats.
That’s what makes the chamber’s endorsement of Peters notable. Even as this news broke, the chamber launched new ads blasting two Democratic senators, Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado.
After all, control of the Senate is at stake in November, and the chamber wants Republicans to take over. GOP control of the House doesn’t appear to be at risk in November, so the chamber can afford to back a Democrat or two there — just to show it’s not a partisan organization.
Right.

While all six openly gay members of the U.S. House and one member of the Senate are Democrats, that could change in November as at least three gay Republicans are currently running.
