UNREAL: Mexican President Calls for US Gun Ban
As if there were not enough American leftists clamoring for increased restrictions on the constitutional right of Americans to bear arms, a joint session of Congress has also been addressed by the President of Mexico, who blamed the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 for increased violence in his country.
Despite the fact that the American people overwhelmingly support individual gun rights, liberals and Democrats continue to undermine the Second Amendment every time they are given the opportunity. In this instance, they apparently believed that support from south of the border would bolster their position.
In addition trying to influence American gun control legislation, the president’s speech covered a number of topics, from unemployment and drug interdiction to illegal immigration and racial profiling by law enforcement.
In a 35-minute speech before the joint session of Congress, Mr. Calderón talked about the human toll of the violence associated with drug trafficking. “Restoring public security will not be easy and will not be quick,” he said, adding that it “will take time, it will take money and, unfortunately to our deep sorrow, it will take human life as well.”Congress should disallow similar events in the future. America has plenty of far-left ideology in Washington already without importing it from other countries.
But he added, “This is a battle that has to be fought because the future of our families is at stake.”
Mr. Calderón was for the most part warmly received, though some of the issues he raised – including illegal immigration – are among the most divisive in American politics. He said that Mexico was doing its best to create thousands of jobs and keep Mexicans at home. “My government does not favor the breaking of rules,” he said.
The study of laws and their effects–intended and unintended–in other nations and even in other times in history can be useful and, in fact, we probably don’t do enough of it. But there’s a difference between research and lobbying, and Congress should know the difference.
Educated American voters do.
