CNN’s Jim Acosta Embarrasses Himself – Complete Lack of Knowledge and History Surrounding The Statue of Liberty…

Posted on August 2, 2017 by sundance

During a televised press conference White House Policy Advisor Stephen Miller was answering questions about the newly proposed RAISE Act. A reporter from CNN named Jim Acosta, who always advocates for maximum camera time, thought he could engineer a narrative of self-promotion through the use of the Statue of Liberty.

After inferring an inscription on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty was part of our founding documents, it wasn’t, an epic fail followed:

The Statue of Liberty had nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with immigration. The Emma Lazarus poem that Acosta refers to was affixed to the pedestal as an ex post facto inscription in 1903. Even the New York Times knows the correct origin:

“The only immigrants mentioned at the dedication in 1886 were the “illustrious descendants of the French nobility” who fought on behalf of the United States against Britain during the American Revolution.”

(Via New York Times) […] Emma Lazarus’s poem only belatedly became synonymous with the Statute of Liberty, whose 125th birthday as a gift from France will be celebrated on Friday by the National Park Service.

Lazarus’s “New Colossus,” with its memorable appeal to “give me your tired, your poor,” was commissioned for a fund-raising campaign by artists and writers to pay for the statue’s pedestal.

But while the poem was critically acclaimed — the poet James Russell Lowell wrote that he liked it “much better than I like the Statue itself” because it “gives its subject a raison d’être which it wanted before quite as much as it wants a pedestal” — it was not even mentioned at the dedication ceremony.

Finally in 1903, after relentless lobbying by a friend of Lazarus who was descended from Alexander Hamilton, himself an immigrant, it was “affixed to the pedestal as an ex post facto inscription,” the art historian Marvin Trachtenberg wrote.

“Gradually, thereafter, the awareness spread not only of the significance of the lines of the poem but also of the significance of the aspect of national tradition it expressed,” another historian, Oscar Handlin, wrote. “Liberty was not simply the bond between ancient allies; nor was it only the symbol of liberal ideas of justice and freedom; it was also the motive force that had peopled the wilderness and made the country that emerged what it was.”

Barry Moreno, a historian of the statue for the National Park Service, recalled that it “was never built for immigrants.”

“It was,” he recalled, “built to pay tribute to the United States of America, the Declaration of Independence, American democracy, and democracy throughout the world. It honored the end of slavery, honored the end of all sorts of tyranny and also friendship between France and America.” (read more)

This is exactly how most countries control immigration. If they are coming broke they don't want them.

FACT CHECK: Do You Have To Speak English To Be Naturalized?

Posted By Holmes Lybrand On 10:04 AM 08/03/2017

During a heated exchange at the Wednesday press briefing between a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta, the question of English requirements for naturalization came up.

In an attempt to ridicule a proposal on immigration, Acosta cited a poem on the Statue of Liberty, stating that the poem “doesn’t say anything about speaking English” in order to immigrate to the U.S.

Acosta continued, “Aren’t you trying to change what it means to be an immigrant coming into this country if you’re telling them you have to speak English? Can’t people learn how to speak English when they get here?”

Miller rebutted, “Well, first of all, right now it’s a requirement that to be naturalized you have to speak English.”

    Verdict: Mostly True

Applicants for naturalization must pass an English language test unless they meet certain requirements for exemption.

    Fact Check:

In order to be naturalized in the U.S. applicants must pass three English language tests, including speaking, reading and writing, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

“An officer determines an applicant’s ability to speak and understand English based on the applicant’s ability to respond to questions normally asked in the course of the naturalization examination,” the USCIS website reads.

The applicant can fail this test if “he or she does not understand sufficient English to be placed under oath or to answer the eligibility questions on his or her naturalization application,” it continues.

According to the USCIS, applicants must “sufficiently demonstrate the ability to read in English, applicants must read one sentence out of three sentences.”

    [dcquiz]

Applicants fail this test if they omit or substitute a “content word,” pause for long amounts of time while reading, or make “pronunciation or intonation errors to the extent that the applicant is not able to convey the meaning of the sentence and the officer is not able to understand the sentence.”

Similarly to the reading portion, the writing test requires applicants to write one of three sentences. The test is failed if different words or sentences are used, if only one or two words are used, if abbreviations are used for “a dictated word,” or if the sentence is “completely illegible.”

Certain individuals can request an exemption if they are “50 or older at the time of filing for naturalization and have lived as a permanent resident (green card holder) in the United States for 20 years.” The same exemption can apply for individuals who are “55 or older at the time of filing for naturalization and have lived as a permanent resident in the United States for 15 years.”

If an applicant doesn’t pass the test, they are given two chances to re-take the test.

Thank you Jean!! I just knew we weren't stupid enough to naturalize people who don't speak our language. Sure, there can be some rare exceptions, exemptions, but VERY FEW, and now, probably time for all of that to end for new people coming in to stop this multi-language business in our country. One Nation, One Flag, One Language!!!

They have been here for 20 years and can't read, write, or speak English? No exemption!

It was for the older members of the family. Can't undo the past, but this new bill will end that nonsense in the future, because it's ending chain migration altogether. Wonderful bill and was so glad to see Trump got involved and made it even better.

The idea was trying to imply racism, and that only anglos or white people speak English in the world.

That is a very ridiculous assumption.

A young man from out town married a German girl, she spoke perfect English. When I complimented her on it - she told me they had to take 3 years and be proficient in it in order to graduate high school.

Just because our children, Texas I'm talking about, can take 2 years of Spanish and still not be able to do more than ask where the bathroom is, think that happens all over the world.

Or they hope we all think that.
