Reportedly, the virtual Border Patrol agent is already being tested with “low risk” passengers at Dennis DeConcini Port in Nogales, Ariz.
The Federal government has unveiled a new tool that it hopes will help to curtail the number of illegal aliens that cross the border into the United States.
University of Arizona researchers in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection have created a virtual Border Patrol agent that, they claim, is capable of interviewing people who wish to enter the country and detecting if they are lying about their motives.
The virtual agent is part of a computer kiosk known as the Automated Virtual Agent for Truth Assessments in Real-Time that might become a fixture of U.S. airports in coming years.
It is reportedly already being tested with “low risk” passengers at Dennis DeConcini Port in Nogales, Ariz., according to Daily Mail.
After logging fingerprints, the computer asks a series of questions and tries to spot liars using:
- A microphone to monitor vocal quality, pitch and frequency.
- An infrared camera to look at pupil dilation and where the eyes focus.
- A high-definition camera to record facial expressions.
The programs creators say that the virtual agent has about a 90 percent success rate in identifying falsified information.
