NO FIGHTING SIOUX? The University of North Dakota has asked media outlets to stop using the Fighting Sioux logo and nickname. The university doesn't want the name or logo used in news or sports stories, and has asked leaders of conferences in which its sports teams participate to stop using the nickname and logo as of today. Instead, the university asked that its teams be referred to as UND or North Dakota. The request comes amid the university's ongoing effort to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo after it was deemed offensive by the NCAA. Supporters of retaining the nickname have been fighting the change ever since, even convincing state lawmakers to pass a law requiring the university to keep the nickname (a law that has since been eliminated). Even if the media stops calling UND the Fighting Sioux, loyal supporters of the name will never stop calling UND teams by the name Fighting Sioux. When the university completely retires the logo and name, we're pretty sure there will be plenty of Fighting Sioux jerseys at every athletic event.

IMMIGRATION POLICIES A recent poll by the Pew Hispanic Center revealed that 59 percent of Hispanics oppose President Barack Obama's increased deportations of illegal immigrants. Was that news to anyone? Did anyone expect Hispanics to be in favor of the U.S. finally beginning to enforce tougher immigration policies? The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported nearly 400,000 people during the fiscal year that ended in?September, and officials say they are targeting illegal immigrants with criminal histories. Good. That's exactly what that agency should be doing. We'd guess that if the Pew Hispanic Center conducted a poll of non-Hispanics, they'd get a much higher number than 59 percent who favor tougher immigration enforcement. Let's not forget the agency is targeting illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds.
