Will Perry's Leadership On The Border Revive His Presidential Appeal?

    Matt Vespa | Aug 14, 2014

If there’s anything that will rehabilitate Texas Governor Rick Perry’s image as a presidential candidate, it’ll be how he’s handling the border. In 2012, Perry briefly took the top spot within the Republican field for president only to see his support evaporate after a couple of debate performances that one could only describe as disastrous.

Perry’s hunting location with a racially insensitive name also elicited some controversy, but where he saw his conservative support evaporate was over his bill that provided in-state tuition for illegal aliens.
At the recent RedState Gathering in Texas, Perry’s leadership on securing the border is having a positive effect on his reputation. Kevin wrote that his speech to the attendees covered all the topics conservatives like to see their candidates espouse on the campaign trail. Perry touted his economic record, criminal justice reform, and how the Lone Star state is the mecca for high-tech exports. Such rosy economic news isn’t what’s being disseminated at the national level.
As for his bill allowing illegals to receive in-state tuition, some feel that his leadership on the border has “inoculated” himself from those attacks on the right, others aren’t so sure (via NRO):
“The people who are here this year who have been deeply skeptical of him in the past are seeing the whole national guard issue and securing the border and suddenly reacting to him differently than they did in the past,” RedState editor Erick Erickson told National Review Online after Perry’s speech Friday at the RedState Gathering in Fort Worth. “They don’t think he’s squishy on the issue since he’s sending the soldiers.” …
Perry was the morning star of the conference, though. “If Washington won’t act to secure the border, as the governor of Texas, I will,” he declared, eliciting a 22-second standing ovation.

“Dealing firmly with what’s happening on the border now will to some degree inoculate him from statements in the past,” DeMint told NRO during a Friday interview. “And so, we’ll see how it plays out. There’s no one who will run who hasn’t made a statement or voted for something that wasn’t exactly what they would want now.”
Heritage Action and other conservatives have used the same “magnet” metaphor deployed against Perry to describe President Obama’s immigration policies, though. Is it easy for a presidential rival to say that Perry and Obama’s magnets helped create the border crisis?
“It’s all rhetoric, it’s all done in front of the cameras,” Katrina Pierson, a close ally of Senator Ted Cruz (R. Texas) — she was an early supporter of his Senate campaign and Cruz’s father, Rafael, endorsed her congressional bid — told NRO. “Just going back to the last legislative session, he could have ended sanctuary cities, he could have ended all kinds of magnets.”
Let’s see what happens. It’s not like the 2016 race is over for Republicans if Perry decides to sit it out. But for now, Perry is certainly highlighting he's a leader on immigration enforcement, which is a red meat issue for conservatives due to Washington inaction.

Gov. Rick Perry signed into law a measure allowing certain immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children to attend state colleges and universities at the tuition rates charged to legal in-state residents.

. . . The Secure Fence Act of 2006 was passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2006.

The government of Mexico and ministers of several Latin American countries have condemned the plans.[15] Rick Perry, governor of Texas, also expressed his opposition saying that instead of closing the border it should be opened more and through technology support legal and safe migration. . .

Liberals Trying to Destroy Texas Governor Rick Perry With Bogus Indictment

By Steve Straub On August 15, 2014 · 1 Comment · In US

This proves that Democrats will use whatever slimebag tactic they can use to try and stop the people they fear most. This also shows they fear Rick Perry.

    Via ABC News:
A grand jury indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Friday for abusing the powers of his office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption — making the possible 2016 presidential hopeful his state’s first indicted governor in nearly a century.
A special prosecutor spent months calling witnesses and presenting evidence that Perry broke the law when he promised publicly to nix $7.5 million over two years for the public integrity unit, which is run by Travis County District Rosemary Lehmberg’s office. Several top aides to the Republican governor appeared before grand jurors in Austin, including his deputy chief of staff, legislative director and general counsel. Perry himself wasn’t called to testify.
He was indicted by an Austin grand jury on felony counts of abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant. Maximum punishment on the first charge is five to 99 years in prison. The second is two to 10 years.
Perry said Lehmberg, who is based in Austin, should resign after she was arrested and plead guilty to drunken driving in April 2013. A video recording made at the jail showed Lehmberg shouting at staffers to call the sheriff, kicking the door of her cell and sticking her tongue out.
Perry was with his veto was criticizing the ethics of the very office behind the effort to indict him:
    Via the Statesman:
The indictments stemmed from Perry’s threat last summer to withhold $7.2 million in state money from Lehmberg’s office unless she step down – a threat he later carried out by vetoing an appropriation in the state budget. The money was earmarked for the state’s Public Integrity Unit, which is housed in Lehmberg’s office. Perry’s veto forced Travis County taxpayers to partially fund the office, but several prosecutors and staff lost their jobs or had to be reassigned.
Lehmberg supporters said Perry’s actions constituted political retribution; Many Republicans have said the Public Integrity Unit has unfairly targeted their party for prosecutions. The Travis County District Attorney’s office has for decades been led by Democrats, including Lehmberg.
Had Lehmberg resigned, Perry would have named her replacement.
Mary Anne Wiley, General Counsel for Perry, said in a statement following the indictment: “The veto in question was made in accordance with the veto authority afforded to every governor under the Texas Constitution. We will continue to aggressively defend the governor’s lawful and constitutional action, and believe we will ultimately prevail.”
    More from Ace of Spades:
The DA blew a .238 blood alcohol level which isn’t just drunk, it’s AoSHQ Lifestyle Drunk. She was convicted of the charge.
There was a special prosecutor but remember Travis County is where the Tom Delay persecution was launched. They kind of hate Republicans and will abuse the courts to stop them.
Is this pure political bull****? Yeah. But it’s really hard to run for President while your under indictment. This is another reminder that Democrats play for keeps.
So yeah. State ethics office run by a jailed convict. Perry objects. Perry indicted. Makes sense.

What do think of this bogus scandal?

Breaking: Gov. Rick Perry Indicted By Texas Grand Jury For Vetoing Funding Bill…Update: Indictment Precipitated By The Very Office Whose Ethics Perry Was Criticizing

This appears like a leftist effort to get Perry for actually going after corruption. Gee, ya think someone is trying to take Perry out of the 2016 race? He just announced last month he was running, and many were taking another look at him as a viable candidate.

    Update:
Perry was with his veto was criticizing the ethics of the very office behind the effort to indict him:

We will continue to aggressively defend the governor’s lawful and constitutional action, and believe we will ultimately prevail.”
Immediately, after the indictment was announced, Perry, who is poised to make a second run for president, tweeted: “Help RickPAC elect candidates who support a strong border, new jobs, smaller gov’t, and fiscal responsibility.”
Travis County deputies arrested and charged Lehmberg with DWI in April 2013. She later pled guilty and was sentenced to 45 days in jail – an usually harsh sentence for a first-time drunken driving charge. She later prevailed in a civil lawsuit to remove her from office.
After his veto, Perry said, “Despite the otherwise good work (of) the Public Integrity Unit’s employees, I cannot in good conscience support continued state funding for an office with statewide jurisdiction at a time when the person charged with ultimate responsibility of that unit has lost the public’s confidence.”
And yes, there is an old lawyer joke that a DA can indict a “ham sandwich”, meaning pretty much anyone can get indicted if the DA wants to get you. Far cry from a conviction.

Indictment Because Rick Perry Questioned Keeping Travis County DA In Her Position After DWI, Threats She Made

This is a video of Rosemary Lemberg. Who is Rosemary Lemberg? Rosemary Lemberg, Democratic head of the Travis County DA’s Office(Travis read: only liberal part of Texas, Austin) was arrested for DWI.

She fought, cursed and threatened the officers. She thereafter refused to step down, because that would have allowed Rick Perry to appoint someone else to the position, possibly someone who wasn’t a Democrat.

It is a common practice of law enforcement to video uncooperative prisoners to protect themselves and to record possible issues.

So rather than have this woman who threatened officers in a position that actually requires integrity, Perry said he would veto funding the the Public Integrity Unit which was under Lemberg’s command, until they got their ethics straightened out and did something to resolve the problem.

The Public Integrity Unit’s response? Indict Rick Perry.

    That’s his “big crime”.

According to the Statesman, many Republicans have said the Public Integrity Unit has unfairly targeted their party for prosecutions.

The Travis County District Attorney’s office has for decades been led by Democrats, including Lehmberg.

    That’s some public integrity, there.

    Here’s dashcam of Lemberg’s arrest:

VIDEO: Rick Perry Indicted On Federal Charges... Revenge From The DA?

    (TEXAS)
Friday a grand jury indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry for allegedly abusing the powers of his office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption. This makes this likely 2016 presidential hopeful his state's first indicted governor in nearly a century.
A special prosecutor spent months reviewing case law, talking to witnesses and presenting evidence that Rick Perry broke the law. when he promised publicly to nix $7.5 million over two years for the public integrity unit run by the office of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg. Lehmberg, a Democrat, was convicted of drunken driving, but refused Perry's calls to resign.
