You Are Being Trolled (by Barack Obama)

You Are Being Trolled (by Barack Obama)

    Good morning folks,
How desperate is the White House to maintain control of the Senate? Desperate enough to reduce the President to trolling. As Major Garrett explained in National Journal, the President is purposefully overstating his case (or in some cases, directly lying) knowing that it will create controversy.
CBS Political Director John Dickerson writes in Slate that the President is trolling. “Under this approach, a president wants the fact-checkers to call him out (again and again) because that hubbub keeps the issue in the news, which is good for promoting the issue to the public. It is the political equivalent of there is no such thing as bad publicity.” Or, put another way, “Obama’s twist is a new, higher order of deception: creating the controversy for the purposes of milking it.”

Deception isn’t a word that most would want associated with them, yet President Obama’s team thrives and depends on it. Dickerson continues, “We are in a campaign year in which Democrats are struggling to find an issue they can use as a weapon against Republicans who have the upper hand… Facts, schmacts. As long as people are talking about an issue where my party has an advantage with voters, it’s good. ..Democrats have several reasons to keep stories about equal-pay equity in the news. It excites their voters, attracts female voters, and crowds out whatever the Republicans wanted to talk about (these days, Obamacare). It also sets a trap. The more Republicans have to talk about politically unfavorable issues, the greater chance they’ll slip up and say something dumb like candidates Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock did that can be exploited more broadly.”
Now you know why candidates like Mark Pryor, Gary Peters, Mark Udall and Mark Begich are following the President’s lead, lying about the facts in order to create coverage about anything but the issues that voters care most about.
As you might guess, lying to voters to create controversy comes at a price. A new Fox News poll out today shows that “…Six in ten American voters think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters some or most of the time. Thirty-seven percent think Obama lies “most of the time,” while another 24 percent say he lies “some of the time.” Twenty percent of voters say “only now and then.” Likewise, in battleground states including North Carolina, Louisiana, Colorado, Michigan, and Iowa, Democratic Senators and candidates have seen their unfavorability skyrocket. It turns out that people don’t appreciate being lied to.
For some time now, we’ve said that Democrats on the ballot have a credibility problem. Back in early November, we wrote, “People want credibility and competence in Washington, and the Democrats controlling things can’t claim to be either. Credibility and competence. It’s a huge political problem, and vulnerable Democrats know it.” Call us crazy, but we’re not sure that lying and trolling is going to help. Don’t feed the trolls; focus on the issues people care about.
    Seize the day,

    2014 BATTLEGROUND SONAR
(ALASKA) HYPOCRISY ALERT: Pro-Begich Alaska Super PAC Fixated On Local Cred Is Actually Funded Almost Entirely By D.C. Money
But the pro-Begich Put Alaska First also relies heavily on out-of-state support, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission. Nearly all of its funds have come from the national Democratic group, Senate Majority PAC, and most of that money has been paid to a Democratic media buying firm created to work with Senate Majority PAC and other national super PACs.

    • Of the $825,000 total the group has received, $645,000, or 82 percent of that has come from the Senate Majority PAC, the principal Democratic super PAC spending money in midterm Senate races.
    • Begich Said “There Is One Thing We Don’t Like In Alaska And That Is Outsiders Telling Us How To Do Our Business.” (Sen. Mark Begich, Congressional Record, 7/16/12, p. S5037)

(ARKANSAS) Pryor, Democrats Lie to Seniors, Resort to MediScare
Cotton and 218 of his colleagues in the House did indeed vote for the Paul Ryan budget, which would slash costs by moving to a privatized “premium support”–or voucher–system of health care delivery for senior citizens. Is that a bad idea? Probably not. In fact, a more generous version already exists in the form of Medicare Advantage, the private-sector Medicare alternative that seems to be going great guns in the Obamacare era: an estimated 30% of seniors have signed up, an increase of 38% in recent years. The brute force of competition (plus some federal subsidies that both parties want to diminish) has allowed increased benefits like gym memberships and free medication. The fact that many of these plans are based within systems where doctors are paid salaries makes it potentially more cost-effective than classic fee-for-service Medicare. It would be very valuable to have a serious conversation about this. Pryor is a fiscal conservative. He’s said that all programs (including Medicare, presumably) should be on the table. He could be part of the solution, rather than hiding behind traditional Democratic battlements.

(COLORADO) New video: Now is the Time
This past weekend, the people of Colorado nominated Cory Gardner to be their candidate for the United States Senate. He rocked the arena! Check out our latest video, highlighting his nomination and be sure to share with your family and friends.

(MINNESOTA) GOP U.S. Senate candidate McFadden targets Franken’s record in the first TV ad
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike McFadden is targeting Democratic incumbent Al Franken’s voting record in the first television ad of Minnesota’s Senate race. The campaign ad features a hockey player misfiring on multiple shots at the goal whiles an announcer criticizes Franken’s votes on taxes, government spending and the Affordable Care Act.

(VIRGINIA) In the Virginia woods, Mark Warner is trailed by Obamacare - “Inside the event, Gillespie supporters appeared to outnumber Warner backers by a wide margin.”
“The problem with Sen. Warner is with his record,” Gillespie said. “The more Virginia learns about that record, they’ll be surprised because it’s also at odds with how Sen. Warner portrays himself back home. He is not the independent voice he portrays himself to be, voting 97% of the time President Obama and Harry Reid.”

    • CNN: Warner punted when asked if he would welcome President Barack Obama to campaign with him before November.

(MONTANA) New Steve Daines Ad: “RESULTS”
(LOUISIANA) Louisiana group hits back at Sen. Mary Landrieu campaign ad with ‘Actress Mary’ spot
A group called Keep Louisiana Working released a television ad titled “Actress Mary” on Thursday to call out Sen. Mary Landrieu for recreating comments from a Senate hearing so she could use them in a 60-second campaign spot. Ms. Landrieu, a Louisiana Democrat up for re-election this November, is getting mixed reviews for a new campaign ad that shows her standing up for the state’s oil and gas industry. Positive reactions quickly dissolved after critics pointed out that she had to act out a Senate hearing to get around rules that prevent candidates from using such footage in campaign pitches.

(IOWA) Bruce Braley’s Poll Numbers Fall Following Farmer Comments
Democratic Senate candidate Bruce Braley’s recent criticism of a fellow senator, who he described as a farmer that never went to law school, has significantly hurt his standing among likely Iowa voters, according to a new Washington Free Beacon poll. The Free Beacon poll found that 50 percent of likely Iowa voters surveyed would be less likely to vote for Braley after his comments, while 21 percent would be more likely. The Polling Company, Inc. conducted the survey.

(NEW HAMPSHIRE) Scott Brown’s Strong Start
In the second half of March, Republican Scott Brown raised an impressive $275,000 to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire. “That sum came despite Brown not holding any fundraisers or paying any staff to work on raising money for him,” reports the Hill newspaper. It came “simply from donations contributed to his website or via check in the mail, while he toured New Hampshire in his truck on a listening tour.”
