**** Completed ****
Synopsis:
Two ordinances have passed and one has failed.
In Spring 2005, Republican Councilman John Jaremchuk proposed a law similar to Hazleton's. It would have allowed police to ticket anyone who couldn't provide proof of U.S. residency within 72 hours and fined landlords and employers $1,000 for each undocumented person they housed or employed. The ordinance was defeated, but continues to resonate.
Ordinance 466 was necessary. Approved June 8, the law allows police to ticket any vehicle with out-of-state tags parked on city streets if the owner has lived in Delaware longer than 60 days. Council approved it unanimously. The ordinance's sponsor: John Jaremchuk. In Delaware, officials won't issue license plates to people who can't prove legal residency.
Another recent law in Elsmere requires landlords to collect vehicle registration information from all tenants. Police can then check for residency.
Oct. 13, 2006 this resolution failed.
In an upcoming October town council meeting Councilman John Jaremchuk plans to propose a resolution requiring vendors providing services to Elsmere to sign an affidavit swearing they do not employ any undocumented workers.
Activist Instructions:
We need ALIPAC Activists to make calls, send letters, faxes, and e-mails to all members of the Elsmere Council asking them to please pass the ordinances to prevent illegal aliens from city employment and rental properties. You may want to share with them some articles about what other cities are doing and some of the problems and public attitudes (polls) about illegal immigration.
Examples:
Dear Councilman _________:
I am calling/writing today to ask you to please follow the lead of Hazelton, PA and pass strict immigration enforcement measures in Elsmere as soon as possible. The federal government is not adequately securing our border or enforcing our existing immigration laws. I feel it is incumbent upon our states and cities to take action to protect communities from illegal immigration. Illegal immigration has many negative repercussions for our communities including depressed wages, increased health care costs, increased costs to taxpayers, increased crime, infectious diseases, and lost American jobs.
I hope you will stand with the vast majority of Americans that want our laws enforced and our communities and tax dollars protected from illegal aliens.
Please pass these ordinances as soon as possible. A majority of your constituents support this effort.

Important update! Looks like a new ordinance will be proposed in an October council meeting. Added details in the synopsis, and can be found in the following article.
There is a place to leave comments about this issue in the local paper.
Thanks everyone for participating in this campaign.
There have been two wins and this loss. Hopefully, this campaign will become active again, and produce more ordinances designed to discourage illegal immigration.
