Gov. Brad Henry signed House Bill 1804 today, putting into law one of the country's toughest and most sweeping immigration reform bills.
The bill will set criminal penalties for knowingly and willingly harboring illegal immigrants. No public benefits will be allowed to people who are in the state illegally, except in cases of medical emergencies or emergency aid. Businesses will need to run all workers through a federal verification system or risk penalties and legal action.
The legislation also cuts off in-state tuition for illegal immigrant students unless they can verify they have applied for citizenship or plan to within one year.

Tuition should be cut off to anyone in this country illegally. It shouldn't matter if they have applied or plan to apply...they are not citizens. |

Is this a loophole or what? For the most part, the bill is a good start..as long as its enforced.

Way to go Oklahoma, thats showing some guts to the rest of the country!!
Now as far as then instate tuition, what are the illegals going to do, walk on in to the nearest immigration office and say I need to apply for citizenship so I can get instate tuition  I really doublt it!!

This will no doubt creat a mass exodus of illegals into neighboring states, compounding their problems. The best thing for them to do is follow oklahoma's example.Oh by the way....PUT THAT IN YOUR CRACK PIPE AND SMOKE IT LA RAZA BOYS!!!  |

If I remember right, this was the one compromise made by the Republicans in the Oklahoma Senate in order to make the bill veto proof (note the large majorities by which it was passed). Other than that it's certainly an exciting day for not only my state but other states as well.
However, Brad Henry is a total squish and the only reason he signed this bill was because he knew that it would come back to haunt him later on. In other words, he signed this bill because the will of the people demanded it.
I can only pray that more of these will follow. |

Exactly how does an illegal immigrant that is residing illegally in the United States go about applying for citizenship legally?  |

Great job OK! However, it was sheer lunacy to permit illegals in-state tuition, while legal citizens from other states must pay higher rates. Where is the logic? If you are 'illegal' you are not a citizen of any state. If anything, illegals should have to pay more than the legal out-of-state students, not less. Why do we continue to reward them?

Do you know of any illegal alien who is willing to walk into an immigration office and ask to apply for citizenship so they can get in state tuition, don't you think they are going to be alittle affraid of being here illegaly and getting deported

The problem is, they are receiving in-state tuition. They have managed to circumvent the system in the same manner they are managing to receive other benefits reserved for citizens of this country.
I was appalled when I saw an interview with a college administrator who admitted they offer in-state tuition to 'undocumented.' Don't forget, there are many who feel they 'deserve' a chance. The administrator's rationale was that we should not deny these 'innocent' children the 'right' to receive a college education, simply because they are here 'undocumented.' I'll see if I can find info online to substantiate. It was nauseating!
