Update on the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish in Tucson Unified School District schools
Forward to everyone you know!
As many of you know I found out from my son a week ago, that every morning in his 2nd grade classroom is told to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish. When I found this out, I was outraged. I went to his school and met with his teacher, Mrs. Lee. I told Mrs. Lee that I was very offended, and outraged that my 8 year old son was being required to say the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish. She told me that she disagreed, and felt that it was a great way to teach Spanish to these 8 year olds. I then told her that my son was not allowed to participate in this. I told her that when you pledge allegiance to this country, you do it in English, and not a foreign language! I told her it was a disgrace to the men and women who are fighting or have fought for this country and its flag. She disagreed. I then went to the principal, Mrs. Godfrey, and expressed my concerns and outrage that second grade students in her school were pledging allegiance to this country in a foreign language. She informed me that Only Mrs. Lee's class did this, and Mrs. Lee had every right to do this. She also told me that she contacted the VFW and they had no problem with this. She told me I had two choices, one, tell my son not to participate, or two, have my son moved to another class. I chose the latter. Having my son in the same classroom as this teacher who was having second graders pledge allegiance to our country in a foreign language was too much.
She might think the problem has been resolved, because my son has been moved to another class, but there are still 20+ other second graders being required to say the Pledge of Allegiance in a foreign language. This practice of pledging in a foreign countries native tongue is wrong, no matter what language it is. I am of German descent, but am a proud American, and I would be just as angry if my son was required to say the Pledge in German.
It is very SIMPLE, you don’t pledge allegiance to your country in a foreign language.
Now here is where I need help. I need each one of you to take a few minutes and e-mail the Principal, and the Tucson Unified School District governing board. Let them know that you feel this is wrong, and needs to change immediately. Don’t make this an argument about illegal immigration or speaking Spanish, but make this an argument about only Pledging Allegiance to the USA in English! Please be polite, as we want to get the point across, and not come across as a angry mob. Also if you are a veteran or currently enlisted military personnel, please let her know that this is a disgrace to all those who have fought or are fighting. She currently thinks that no one has a problem with it. I have listed the contact info for both the Principal and the TUSD Board below.

Speaking English for the alligience to the flag is a great way for those WHO ARE NOT FROM THIS COUNTRY to learn English, Mrs. Lee _________________ Hey, it doesn't really matter to me, baby, everyone has got to fight to be free. You don't have to live like a refugee!--Tom Petty |

Good Lord -- why can't this teacher see than requiring HER students to recite it in English is a great way for them to LEARN ENGLISH!!!
I suppose there is no hard and fast rule that it be spoken in English, but it is an outright offense to the people of this nation who speak the English language. Saying it in English is as much a part of the experience, of the spirit of the Pledge as the Pledge is itself.
But this is something these people cannot understand.
How offensive -- I wonder if Americans went to other countries and demanded that the anthems and creeds of their countries had to be recited in English -- how they would feel.
There is just no end to the arrogance of these people. |

I called yesterday but the principal was in a meeting so I left a message. SHE JUST CALLED ME BACK!!!!
I reminded her about the time in 2006 when the Star Spangled Banner was translated into Spanish and playing on the radio. I reminded her that the backlash was so huge that PRES. BUSH HAD TO COME OUT ON TV AND ANNOUNCE THAT IT SHOULD ONLY BE SUNG IN ENGLISH!!!
She said there is no protocol on how the Pledge should be recited, and I told her IT'S BECAUSE IT HAS NEVER BEEN RECITED IN ANYTHING BUT ENGLISH!! It is a "given." Just like English is our national language.
Can you imagine if we said the Pledge in German? Russian?????
I also told her I don't care how Ms. Lee teaches Spanish, JUST STAY AWAY FROM THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE!!
She was not happy with me at all (easy to tell) and said she will take it up with the "governing board."
EVERYONE, PLEASE CALL HER NOW AND TELL HER TOO BEFORE SHE GOES TO THE GOVERNING BOARD!!! _________________ PRESS 1 FOR ENGLISH. PRESS 2 FOR DEPORTATION. |

I'm glad to see this topic b/c just yesterday my teen informed
me that a student in his class refused to stand or recite the
Pledge. When I asked the student's ethnicity I must admit
I was shocked considering all things. He was Muslim, Arab.
Now this is just ridiculous to me that he would refuse to
recite the pledge while living in the country and getting an
education at one of the top schools in this area.
In another more baffling case my daughter's teacher, 5th grade,
REFUSES to say the pledge b/c she disagrees with the war.
I think she sets a horrible example b/c the class is 95%
Latino Anchor Babies. I feel she should be teaching them loyalty
to their country but obviously all of these people are using
their freedom of speech expression. May I add this teacher
is a lesbian. Maybe that's another part of it. |

| I just read the post and I can not believe the VFW encouraged the principal to have her teachers command their students to give the United States Pledge of Allegiance in a foreign language. Of course I haven’t been active in the VFW or the American Legion since I moved to another state 15 years ago but I can never remember the encouragement of giving our Pledge in a foreign language but maybe the times have changed. I was also involved in the Boy Scouts for many years and none of the activities involved giving our Pledge in a foreign language. I can not recall the giving of the Pledge in a foreign language ever coming up in a conversation. This is very strange; I wonder if anyone has contacted the VFW Post to verify that they encouraged the principal and teacher? |

| When I was in the Army our company had a few spanish speakers from Puerto Rico including our 1st SGT and we never had the Pledge or any other presentations in a foreign language of course they all could speak English and held United States citizenship. |

Thanks for calling and emailing, guys! Please spread the word too to your friends.
BTW, THIS TEACHER WHO IS DOING THIS, A MS. LEE, IS DOING IT TO HER CLASS OF 2ND GRADERS. 2nd graders!!!!!!
And why are they teaching Spanish at the 2nd-grade level anyway? Our public education already sucks and they are going to waste precious education time on teaching SPANISH to our elementary kids??? V****V is that all about?? _________________ PRESS 1 FOR ENGLISH. PRESS 2 FOR DEPORTATION. |

Instead of wasting their time teaching these kids spanish how about teaching them the basic skills that most kids these days don't even know AMERICAN HISTORY, MATH, ETC. The teachers are as much to blame as anybdy for the failing of our schools. |

Exactly why kids get to high school and can't read or write. But they can recite the Pledge in Spanish and English. |

Exactly!!! And what's that going to get them? A job at a fast food restaurant? Why don't they teach them how to take orders in spanish while they're at it...But guess what all those jobs that went to those with a HS degree or less are being ousted by IA so now what are they supposed to do? They get a crappy worthless education and can't even get a job...There was a study done I think it was on Lou Dobbs that said 1 in 2 kids in major cities do not graduate from high school and that is going to cost billions in taxes they won't pay when they become adults...They should of thought about that before all those esl classes and filling the schools with IA and anchor babies... |
