Pandemonium at UNC Chapel Hill As Illegal Alien Supporters Riot
JP Here
William Gheen on the Phone Tancredo Event interrupted by violence and property damage.
While important to note that congressman Tancredo’s position for in state tuition for illegals is shared with approximately 80% of North Carolina voters, Latino Student Organizations and anarchists affiliated students shut down the meeting exercising a mob rule or hecklers veto.
No injuries we are aware of, however police did have to deploy tazers and mace in order to protect Congressman Tancredo. Students outside protesting broke out a window causing glass to cover students who were not protesting. They also set off smoke detectors and the security shut down the meeting instead of ousting the protesters
I have videos and we shall be watching for the UNC Chapel Hill Administrators response to this outrageous abridgment of free speech on one of our nation’s top campuses.

| Sounds like another example of far left, pro-amnesty zealots shutting down free speech -- and on a university campus of all places. Can't wait to hear the excuses and damage-control PR spin from the university adminstrators. |

| I am a Carolina fan, but these communists idiots make me sick. They are a disgrace to the rest of humanity. And why was the speech cancelled? If this had been us, heads would have been cracked and the paddy wagons would have been full, plus the show would have gone on. I am itching to see how the numbnuts in charge of UNC lie their way out of this one. |

Last updated 8:50 p.m., Originally published 7:30 p.m., TUESDAY, April 14 — Police officers used pepper spray and a Taser to disperse a crowd of protestors who disbanded former congressman Tom Tancredo's speech in Bingham Hall.
Eight or nine police officers were monitoring a group of protestors who marched from the Pit to the speech, Department of Public Safety spokesman Randy Young said. After the room was at capacity, police blocked access to the door.
A group of protestors tried to force their way through the officers into the room, Young said. When they made physical contact with officers, the officers used pepper spray to try to disperse the crowd. Officers then discharged a Taser, creating an arc of sparks not directed at anyone, Young said.
Meanwhile, in the room, protestors disrupted the speech by attempting to keep Tancredo from speaking by putting a banner in his face. A window was later broken.
Tancredo's group decided to cancel the speech.
No arrests have been made, Young said, and he was not aware of anyone being taken to the hospital.
An investigation will be conducted into possible criminal activity by the protestors and the force used by officers will be reviewed.

dear god! That's a tad extreme...people have a right to speak their minds no matter what opinion it is, and people have the right to protest, but that's just shameful how the protestors did it...I thought it was merely a dance or something? I was going to go and see what was going down, but now I'm glad I didn't go...

I think letting the guy speak would have been more detrimental to YWC's cause than any protest. It is so unnecessary that the protest took a violent, obnoxious turn.

it seems the be the usual extremist crowd who promote free speech UNLESS it's a viewpoint they dislike.

I participated in the protest in the beginning but think it got quite out of hand. I disagree with Tancredo but think the protest methods were completely out of line. Entering the building and actually trying to stop Tancredo was out of line. Protesting to make a counter-point is fine but stopping someone from speaking is another matter. No matter what the person has to say they have a right to speak. I offer my apologies to Student's For Western Civilization. I do not know how the window was broken but I find it very disturbing. Why can't protester be a bit more respectful? Protesting is fine, but let the guy speak.

Yes, it will be interesting to see what, if anything, the media does with this story.
It's a crying shame that good, decent individuals like former congressman Tancredo are treated so horribly when they publicly speak out against certain issues.
You know, my mama would have knocked me into next week for showing such disrespect. Part of what's wrong with illegals and their staunch supporters is a total lack of manners and home training. |

Apparently some college students still act like packs of wild animals. Latino activists and like mobsters are dangerous radicals. They are not sweet kids.
Glad you are OK William. I feel bad for Tancredo and Students for Western Civilization who deserve to have public forums anywhere in this country. |

I was reading the comments to the article and it seems the protestors shot themselves in the foot by THEIR violent actions while claiming they would not tolerate Hate Speech. DUH ??
Most posters are shocked by the way Tancredo was treated even those who do not agree with him. |

Student protestors enter Bingham Hall on Tuesday evening to protest an anti-immigration speech given by former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, who was brought to campus by Youth for Western Civilization. Protestors included members of Students for a Democratic Society and Feminist Students United.

Protestors were cleared from Bingham Hall when police used pepper spray and the threat of Tasers after students interrupted Tancredo’s lecture. Police, who followed the students along their protest march from the Pit, refused to allow more protestors to enter Bingham after the lecture hall was full.
Police used pepper spray to disperse crowds of protestors in Bingham Hall on Tuesday outside the room where former congressman Tom Tancredo was scheduled to speak on immigration but was forced to leave.
Campus police also discharged a Taser, sending sparks in an arc they said was meant to disperse the crowd, not to subdue an individual protestor.
Tancredo, a former Republican U.S. Representative from Colorado, a former presidential candidate and an outspoken critic of immigration, was brought to UNC by the new student organization Youth for Western Civilization.
About 150 people gathered in Bingham Hall auditorium, and many more protestors gathered in the hallway after police declared the room full and blocked the doorway.
“I’m here because I represent UNC-Chapel Hill and I don’t support racism or fascism in the institution in which I am an educator,” graduate student Jason Bowers said.
Riley Matheson, president of Youth for Western Civilization, introduced Tancredo amid hissing, booing and shouts of “racist” and “white supremacist.”
“This is an organization that seeks to promote Western civilization,” Matheson said at the event. “We believe that our civilization is under attack from liberal forces.”
Matheson said his organization supports people from every race participating in Western civilization, but that they must be properly assimilated to American culture first.
“No matter how many times you chant racist, that doesn’t make it true,” he said to the crowd.
After Tancredo entered the room, protesters kept him from speaking by shouting insults and holding a sign declaring “no dialogue with hate” in front of his face. Tancredo waited calmly while protestors held the sign and chanted.
Two protestors holding the sign in front of Tancredo were escorted into the hallway by police, where the Taser and pepper spray were used.
“The cops were trying to tell them to back up,” said first-year student Chris Sparks, who was in the hallway with the protestors. “It was a good 10 or 15 minutes that they would not back up. The cops did what they had to.”
Randy Young, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said officers made a “broadcast transmission of pepper spray” to disperse protestors after they tried to force their way into the room.
After protestors exited the hallway, Tancredo spoke for about two minutes before a protestor outside the building banged on a window, shattering the glass.
Tancredo was escorted out of the room by police after he deemed the situation too volatile, Young said.
Protestors then exited the building and gathered outside.
“Free speech was destroyed today at Chapel Hill by the breaking of glass and violence,” said William Gheen, a former UNC student and president of Americans for Legal Immigration.
“If this is the type of academic atmosphere being cultivated here, taxpayers need to start pulling their f---ing money.”
Sophomore Adrian Lopez, a member of the Carolina Hispanic Organization, attended the speech to protest Tancredo’s view, but said he did not agree with how the protest was handled.
“I feel very embarrassed about how the student body went about doing this,” Lopez said. “It got completely out of control.”
No arrests were made, but there will be an investigation into criminal activity by protestors and the use of force by officers.

Tancredo was at Winthrop College in Rock Hill Monday night for a townhall meeting. No protest by the open border loonies, just a lot of teed off Americans. Congressman John Spratt D-SC, spent his time doodling on a piece of paper and explaining to us the difference between amnesty and comprehensive immigration reform since we are to stupid to figure it out. Sheriff Terry Johnston of Alamance county was there also.
I told Tancredo that he should run for governor of Colorado next year. He said no but he is considering a run for the senate seat that will be open then |

no arrests were made because it's "them" against "us". if anyone against illegal immigration lashed out like that, every single Latino-based organization would be crying foul and arrests would be made. but THEY lashed out at us, and that's ok. we are becoming the minority. we are becoming the disposable class. we are becoming the voiceless puppets that have to use our tax dollars to aid & abet illegals with no say in the matter.
it's getting ugly. and it seems as if we are getting outnumbered. we need to wake up america, and we need to get more voices on our side, or come this same time next year, we will be a nation of 12 million legalized-illegal aliens, and in tow will be all of their relatives, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc......because after all, we can't "keep families apart." one legalized alien equals 20 of their relatives coming to our country. i am terrified. _________________ Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist"........

| I guess these pro-illegal alien supporters have short memories? The last time they marched in the streets making threats all it did was draw more and more people to our side. When people see how these ungrateful criminals act they quickly take sides against them. Keep up the violence and keep making threats. Soon the illegal alien, open borders idiots won't have anyone supporting them. |
