The United States is growing increasingly weary of the Arab Gulf state of Qatar due to its support of Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, despite the fact that the country is home to the U.S. Central Command with authority from the Gulf Arab region to Central Asia, according to a report in Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

In addition to being the forward headquarters of the U.S. Central Command, Qatar also has a major U.S. military air base at Al-Udeid which Qatar made available to the U.S. after Saudi Arabia asked the U.S. to remove its forces in 2003.

Qatar also is home to the Arab station al-Jazeera, which is known as a media outlet for al-Qaida.

The frustration with Qatar appears to be coming from members of the U.S. Congress who are concerned about U.S. support of an ally that also helps finance Hamas.

"Qatar can't continue to be an American ally on Monday that sends money to Hamas on Tuesday," said Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Qatar is one of the six Gulf Cooperation Countries, or GCC. The others are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

This development has placed Qatar either in competition or at odds with the most prominent of the GCC countries, Saudi Arabia.

While Qatar borders Saudi Arabia, their relationship has been rocky, perhaps because the Saudi kingdom is seen as the neighborhood bully, as one analyst described. There also have been border disputes that remain while their overall relations are seen as poor. Indeed, many critical al-Jazeera broadcasts are aimed at Saudi Arabia.

Relations between the neighbors, however, could become even more tense, since Qatar is the only GCC member that openly seeks military and security agreements with Shiite Iran. Sunni Saudi Arabia is at serious odds with Iran.

In addition to the Sunni Hamas, Qatar also supports the Iranian-supported Shiite Hezbollah. Middle East sources say that Qatar has been very forthcoming in politically supporting Hamas. Indeed, Hamas leader Khalid Meshaal splits his time between Damascus, Syria and Doha, Qatar.

"Qatar gives Hamas millions of dollars a month," according to a senior aide to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. "They say the money is for the people of Gaza, but Hamas steals it, and some of it may be used to buy weapons."

Hamas has administrative and military control over the Gaza Strip.

Last year, Doha hosted the meeting that led to the Doha Accord, bringing to an end for a time the political crisis in Lebanon between the Saudi-led Sunni March 14 Group and the opposition, or March 8 group, led by Hezbollah and a faction of Christians under General Michel Aoun, and the group Amal, led by Shiite parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri.

At the same time, Qatar has been the only GCC country to have direct ties with Israel. Israeli President Shimon Peres in 2007 paid a high profile visit to Qatar's capital. Yet, Qatar has sought to bring about a cease-fire between Hamas and Israel. Following Israeli action against Hamas in the Gaza Strip earlier this year, however, Qatar initially froze those ties.

Qatar then called an emergency meeting of Arab states and Iran to discuss the conflict. In part, the Qatari initiative was to upstage anything Saudi Arabia might do, since many Palestinians within the kingdom support Hamas.
