    Immigration rally to reclaim security

East Haven (WTNH) - An activist group claims Latinos are afraid to cross into the town East Haven where they claim police are stopping immigrants and demanding proof of citizenship.

"They are afraid the police are going to ask them, 'Alright, so where are your papers or where did you come from,'" Raul Rivera, of Latino Unity in Action, said.

The group Latino Unity in Action claims customers at local Hispanic-owned stores are harassed and that police report undocumented people to Federal immigration authorities.

Now, the group is planning a march and protest Saturday to call attention to what it calls an unfair police tactic.

"The community feels really scared to talk with the police," Rivera said.

The group has a permit for the march. Ironcially, the East Haven police department, which it is demonstrating against, is likely to have officers here for security in case opposition groups show up.

"Obviously there is a concern because there is a very strong anti-immigrant sentiment," Vincent Vitkowsky, of Latino Unity in Action, said.

East Haven has become a hotspot for the controversy over illegal immigrants.

In March, a priest released a home video that he claims shows East Haven officers harassing the owner of a Spanish grocery store.

The priest was arrested and the charges were later dropped.

A white supremacist group has twice distributed leaflets spouting hate against Mexicans.

Since then the mayor, police chief and local Latinos have met monthly with a mediator from the US Department of Justice.

"Nothing changed substantially enough for us to call off the march," Vitkowsky said.

The march will begin Saturday at noon. The path will be from 687 Main Street in East Haven to East Haven's Town Hall.

Can't wait to see what flags they will be carrying, or how many signs with Che.
What makes Latinos so afraid to show papers when asked? Perhaps they have none and don't want to pay the price for being here illegally.
And what makes them so special that they don't have to follow US laws?
