PHOENIX, AZ -- Officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office say they are closely examining Sheriff Joe Arpaio's security after a recent shooting involving CNN TV host Lou Dobbs.

Dobbs' New Jersey home was shot at three weeks ago and some say the outspoken host may have been the target of pro-illegal immigration activists.

According to MCSO officials, Dobbs went public Thursday, saying the media's portrayal of him as a 'hate monger' is fueling open borders activists to rally against him, now to the degree of attempting to cause his family bodily harm.

MCSO Spokesperson Ryan Lee said the department is concerned for Arpaio's safety considering that both he and Dobbs are extremely vocal and visible on a national level in their beliefs that illegal immigration is a serious crime, worthy of arrest and incarceration.

Fox talk show host Geraldo Rivera said Saturday that Arpaio and Dobbs are the "two most unpopular figures with millions of American Latinos."

Lee also cites the many protests Arpaio's television and newspaper interviews have incited, saying some protesters' signs have even depicted Dobbs and Arpaio as fellow KKK members.

Lt. Aaron Brown, head of the Arpaio's security detail, says that his team is re-examining the current level of security his unit provides the Sheriff and whether or not more security is now warranted.

No worries, Sheriff Joe Arpaio is bullet proof! Just kidding! Being a former police officer, DEA agent etc, I am sure that Sheriff Joe is taking the appropriate steps for his own personal safety and security, long before this current incident involving Lou Dobbs. I bet he gets threats all the time, not just because of his tough stance on illegal immigration, but jails too. I work in the physical and personal security field and him not having a adequate protection for him is unthinkable. Who would have thought that Lou Dobbs was a target in the first place? There are many public figures that are against illegal immigration, he just may have been a target of opportunity (That is what I am thinking).

I am assuming this was not a well organized or planned plot or operation, since there has been no claim of responsibility from any group. Its too late now for any organization or group to claim responsibility for this incident. Maybe their goal was to just scare him or perhaps it was random? Who knows? It was unsuccessful, this now gives him time to hire an agency to provide him with protection and the ability to respond to a future incident. I wonder what the investigation will reveal?

I've been wondering about Joe's safety for some time now but I didn't expect them to take a pot shot at Lou, if that is indeed what happened. The fact that the bullet hit near Lou's attic makes me wonder if it was a coincidence, but it could have been meant to be only a warning. I'm sure they know if either of these fellas comes up hurt or worse, there will be hell to pay with public opinion at the very least.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office is reviewing security measures in light of a shooting at the New Jersey home of CNN anchor Lou Dobbs.

A bullet hit Dobbs' house in Wantage, N.J., on Oct. 5. Dobbs and his wife were nearby, but nobody was injured.

Dobbs said he has been receiving threatening phone calls for weeks. On his radio show, he connected the gunshot to his advocacy for a crackdown on illegal immigration, which also is a focus of Arpaio's.

Lt. Aaron Brown, who's in charge of Arpaio's security, said Thursday, "The sheriff just attempts to do his job the best that he can and often he doesn't let a lot of these things deter how he's going to get his job done."

Arpaio has been the subject of death threats many times in the past, Brown said, adding that security measures always are being reviewed and updated.

"Certainly, things have changed, and we're constantly evolving and changing the way we conduct ourselves," he said.

Immigration rights activists have labeled Dobbs and Arpaio "hate mongers" for their stance on illegal immigration. Arpaio has been a guest several times on Dobbs' television show.
