Lou Dobbs Mulls Run for President, Senate

Thursday, November 19, 2009 9:28 PM

PHOENIX – A week after abruptly quitting his longtime job as a CNN television news host and commentator, Lou Dobbs said on Thursday he is considering career options including possible runs for the White House or U.S. Senate.

"Right now I feel exhilaration at the wide range of choices before me as to what I do next," Dobbs, whose outspoken views on immigration and other topics often angered liberals, told Reuters in a telephone interview from New York on Thursday.

Dobbs, 64, a veteran CNN anchor who had become one of the most divisive figures in U.S. broadcast journalism, announced last Wednesday he was leaving CNN after spending the better part of 30 years at the 24-hour cable news network.

He still hosts a daily radio show.

A Texas native, Dobbs has drawn fire from Latino leaders and civil rights groups for frequent on-air remarks about U.S. border control and immigration that critics saw as demonizing illegal immigrants.

He was also seen as lending credence to the "birther" conspiracy theory, whose adherents believe President Barack Obama's Hawaiian birth certificate was faked to hide a Kenyan birthplace that would make the first black U.S. president ineligible for his office.

Dobbs acknowledged his commentary also stirred friction with CNN executives.

Discussions with CNN/U.S. President Jonathan Klein made it clear Dobbs' style of combining news and opinion was untenable at the network, Dobbs said.

"They wanted to reverse direction on my show from what had been a news debate and my opinion to a middle-of-the road, as Jon Klein styled it, non-opinion show," he said.

"It was just not gratifying to me to sit there and read a news show -- and I much prefer to be more engaged."

Dobbs vowed to carry on expressing his views "fully and straightforwardly in the public arena no matter what I decide to do next."

Since his departure, some have speculated he might run as a candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Jersey, where he has a home, or even run as a third-party candidate in the 2012 U.S. presidential elections -- options he says remain on the table.

"I am ruling nothing out. ... I have come to no conclusions and no decisions," he said. "Do I seek to have some influence on public policy? Absolutely. Do I seek to represent and champion the middle class in this country and those who aspire to it? Absolutely. And I will."

I wouldn't vote for Lou Dobbs for either Senator, or President

Lou would be much better off assuming an anchor position fighting against all aspects of illegal immigration; that's his highest and best calling

Hopefully FOX will sign him to just such a position.

That is if FOX is prepared to take on the fight with the possibility of alienating Hispanics.

However, I think everyone will be surprised at the support Lou would gain from legal Hispanics and Blacks.

Regardless of which direction he chooses next for his life, I just cannot see him simply fading into the woodwork.

I have been saying this since I first saw the man on CNN. I have yelled at my news anchors for years and years and years, to the extent that I won't watch the alphabet network news anymore, because it pisses me off so much that no one would ask the hard questions. Yes the question may have been asked by the underwear models, but without respect for her or the US public, the question would not be answered and some run around reply was heard................until I saw Lou Dobbs. This man cut off the run around replies and bluntly said, "that doesn't answer my question, now answer my question." I loved it and tuned in regular.........that was until about six months ago, when I started sensing that Lou seemed to be on a leash. His vacancy during the acquited child-molester, freak human Michael Jackson death week started raising questions as to why Lou wasn't around. I had hoped it was because he didn't want to be a part of the circus and would return when it all passed which he did. I like the way this American thinks...........I like the questions he asked...........I like the fact that he included a slice of reality in his CNN program that indicated that he was on a leash, when he would say, "to hear MY opinions on these matters, tune into my radio show". I then realized CNN had this man on a leash and only hoped he would quit and eventually run for President.

Lou Dobbs is the man who says what many Americans are afraid to say . We need a man like that in the White House. I would vote to fire the idiot CNN president who has no balls and is afraid of Aztlan and other anti-american organizations. I felt terrible when Lou resigned but I feel know Lou will help more then ever for the rights of the American people in whatever position he finds. Let another network hire him to have the free press that one deserves as the top Mexican News reporter Jorge Ramos says. Jorge left Mexico because he had to follow the party line and he found out that he could express himself as he wanted in the U.S. Now for God's sake let Lou Dobbs a great American express himself as he wants . This is supposed to be a free country with freedom of Press. Que Dios defienda a Lou y le bendiga . Sergio Arrow Arrow Arrow Arrow Exclamation

Lou Dobbs reportedly considering run for U.S. Senate
November 22, 8:46 PM
Columbia Independent Examiner

Lou Dobbs, the former CNN anchor who retired from the network on November 11th, is reportedly considering running for the U.S. Senate. According to a report in the New York Post, Dobbs, a New Jersey resident, may run for the New Jersey Senate seat currently held by Democrat Robert Menendez in 2012.

Menendez was appointed to the seat in 2006, when Jon Corzine left the Senate to begin his term as New Jersey governor. Menendez was elected to the seat later that year, defeating GOP challenger Tom Kean, Jr.

Dobbs is currently registered as an independent in Sussex County. According to Newsmax, Dobbs registered as a Republican in 1991, but made the switch in 2006.

In 2008 the Newark Star Ledger reported that Dobbs had inquired about the steps he would need to take if he decided to run for governor in New Jersey.

CNN reportedly bought out Dobbs contract a year and a half early amid controversy over remarks made on his evening broadcast. Dobbs has been very critical of the government's handling of illegal aliens, and drew attention by siding with so-called "birthers", who do not believe President Obama was born in the United States. Dobbs has asked for Obama to produce a birth certificate proving he can legally hold the office of president.
