World of Socialized Medicine

Choosing between the lesser of who cares

By Bob Beers
Friday, November 20, 2009

The US Senate, under the Teflon leadership of Harry Reid, is preparing to force us into the world of socialized medicine. Histories lessons of just how disastrous such a move can be are being ignored by the same politicians who claim they know more than we do. It seems interesting to me that these supremely wise…giants, as Henry Hyde called them, have the memory of a mayfly.

Those countries that have forced doctors to become wards of the state have very little to be proud of when it comes to the quality of their medical care. Some argue that seniors are very well cared for, but a closer look shows that far too many who have spent their lives paying into the system die before their time due to the complications caused by the enforced extended wait for treatment. In many cases the state will deny treatment because of the assorted technicalities put in place to reduce the cost to the state. The recent suggestion that women in the US should wait until after the age of 50 to have mammograms is just another symptom of the disease. Perhaps this is one of the ways Rahm Emanual has come up with to begin the culling of the excess US population.

Outside of the communist regimes of the Soviet Union and China, Great Britain was one of the first democracies to make the move. It began on July 5, 1948. As is true with all government programs, the bureaucrats underestimated just how expensive this would become. First-year operating costs of Britain’s National Health System were 52 million pounds higher than original estimates as England’s poor and not-so-poor saturated the so-called free system.

In typical fashion, England’s liberals continued to raise taxes rather than admit their error. Many decades of shortages, misery and suffering followed until 1989, when, as if trying an experiment, market-based health care competition was reintroduced to the British system. A true example of the radicalism of the Obama administration is the fact that in spite of all that history they want to repeat the error. The liberal never admits to error, they will keep repeating the same action until they get a different result. Isn’t that the definition of insanity?

America needs a different type of candidate. Both the Democrat and Republican parties are so riddled with corruption; you cannot shrug without jostling one. The ongoing lies coming from the GOP about Sarah Palin are a prime example. The chances of her being able to raise enough support for a 2012 run against the GOP’s attacks are slim, but if she were to run as a VP candidate again with a real conservative such as John Thune it could prove devastating to both the Democrat and GOP liberals.

We need a President with the courage to not bow before foreign leaders. We need a President who understands that in order to really create jobs, the tax burden on business has to be decreased, not increased. We need a President who will protect American lives both in country and overseas, regardless of the feelings of our enemies. We need a President who believes in the sovereignty of our country, even if other countries disagree. We need a President unafraid of upsetting petty dictators. We need a President who will put the American people first and proudly so, and lastly, we need a President who is a real American.

Both parties seem quite content to continue offering up to America’s voters a choice between what is in essence the lesser of “who cares?”. We need and deserve better. Citizen legislators such as John Thune and Sarah Palin fit that bill. It is a pity that so few in our government do.
