GOP blasts league of cities for suit vs. immigrant law

PHOENIX — Gov. Jan Brewer and top Republican leaders lashed out Tuesday at the League of Arizona Cities and Towns for its lawsuit challenging a new law designed to crack down on illegal immigrants getting public benefits.
"At a time when Arizona is suffering from budget deficits of unprecedented proportions and the state is struggling to meet the basic needs of its citizens, it is outrageous and shocking that the League of Cities and Towns would challenge legislation designed to protect the very entities that it was intended for," the governor said.
Brewer said Arizona voters have shown several times, starting with the 2004 election, that they do not want taxpayer money going to help those in the country illegally. She said changes approved by lawmakers in an August special session will plug holes in that law.
And Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, who authored the bill, said the cities should be embarrassed to "side with lawbreakers over law keepers."
But Ken Strobeck, executive director of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, said Brewer is misstating his organization's objections in its lawsuit.
"The law is already clear in Arizona that cities and towns cannot, and do not want to, provide public benefits, public services to people who are in the country illegally," he said.
What concerns league members, he said, are new provisions that subject public employees to up to four months in jail for failing to report illegal immigrants. It also allows any Arizona resident who believes public benefits are being provided to illegal immigrants to sue.
"We don't want to have a flood of new lawsuits over something that we believe was improperly enacted," he said.
Attorneys for the cities say the law is flawed because the language about illegal immigration was not enacted in a separate bill of its own, but included in a larger measure dealing with the state budget. That, the lawsuit claims, makes the maneuver unconstitutional.
House Speaker Kirk Adams, R-Mesa, said that requiring cities to do more to crack down on services to illegal immigrants is related to the budget.
"A budget just isn't about spreadsheets or numbers in a column," he said.

Great, it is against the law to hire illegals.
It also allows any Arizona resident who believes public benefits are being provided to illegal immigrants to sue.
Maybe if the legal citiznes sued the gov't would stop giving illegals services and goods they don't deserve.

What's wrong with that? _________________ The difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien is the equivalent of the difference between a burglar and a houseguest.

I would change one thing to save the city money. Pay them $100 per illegal and make sure several people don't report the same one. It is cheaper than putting people in jail and the money will definitely encourage employees to report them.
If they did that in Miami Dade County instead of looking the other way then many people would be able to pay off their cars and/or homes with all money they could get.
Just another bunch of non-elected people trying to run your life.

If they cared about the cities and towns of Arizona, they would be the ones raising hell to stop illegal immigration, use E-Verify and the 287 (g) program and be reporting every illegal alien their constituent local governments come in contact with through health care services, utility payments, contractors, traffic stops, arrests, criminal investigations, loitering, day labor centers, public services, and home and building inspections, etc., etc., etc.
They aren't working in the best interest of their cities and towns, US citizens, Legal Residents or anyone else that matters in our country. _________________ "A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation." Ronald Reagan "SAVE AMERICA, DEPORT CONGRESS." Judy

Okay Republican leaders - at least in Arizona state politics - you seem to be getting it. Speaking out publicly in favor of strong enforcement! This is an encouraging sign. Hope more Republicans will do so.

That would really be great! But then who will round up the illegal aliens and deport them in Arizona? State Troopers and National Guard?

He can make an Executive Law like Oklahoma did.

We voted a few years ago to cut out illegals and about a year ago they found the law was not enforced and illegals were still draining the system.
Politicians have this knack for writing laws in such a way that no one understands them so they have to run through the court system with "wise Latina" women to interpret them for us.
No means NO. What is so hard to understand about that. It's not that difficult. If you are not legally a citizen in our system you don't get benefits. Including Social Security.

Florida has had a law for a long about illegals not being able to buy property and were still allowed to. In fact during the last election they wanted to change that but people were smart enough to keep it. Now if only they would enforce it. A large percentage of homes in foreclosure were ones bought by illegals be it border jumpers or those who overstayed visas.

GO OKLAHOMA! Come on Arizona, get with it, get Sheriff Joe to the Governor's Mansion! Come on Texas, get someone who will enforce US immigration law into the Governor's Office. Come on California, come on New Mexico, some on Nevada, Colorado, and all points north, south, east and west ... states need to do the job the feds refuse to do.

Does anyone know the reason(s) why the state law passed in Oklahoma which bars illegal aliens from receiving state services appears to be working while that in Arizona is not? Is it because of the huge influx of population to Arizona and the Southwest from other parts of the country which has given rise to the almost universal use of Latin American workers in the construction industry to meet the demands for new homes, etc.? Oklahoma, I believe, remains primarily a faming and ranching state with a smaller, more stable population with far less demand for new housing - thus local people there really are affected directly by illegal foreign workers taking jobs without any accuring benefit to the state's economy, and thus have a real interest in seeing the law enforced?
Georgia was the first state in the nation with the courage to pass such a law, but it does not seem to be enforced at the county level as required. Because of its strong agricultural economy, Georgia farmers need workers which they say the current U.S. H-2A "Temporary Workers in Agriculture" Visas program is too cumbersome and expensive to provide.
After the Southwest, ethno-centric Hispanic special interest groups targeted the Southeastern United States as the "next Hispanic homeland", resulting in a massive influx of immigration, legal and illegal, to that entire area.
