House candidate wants to cut congressional pay

    10:15 AM

Just how hot is the political climate in Wisconsin?

Primary day isn't till Sept. 14, but Democratic congressional candidate Julie Lassa is going on the air today with this ad, emphasizing her roots on the family farm -- and her determination to cut her would-be colleagues' pay.

Whatever they think about her plans to trim their paychecks, Democrats in Washington are counting on Lassa to help them hold onto the seat that veteran Rep. David Obey has occupied since 1969. The veteran Democrat shocked colleagues earlier this year when he decided to walk away from his powerful post as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee to retire at the end of the year.

Lassa's line about ending earmarks is interesting, since that's been one of the controversial powers of the man she hopes to replace: Obey heads the committee that decides where federal dollars get spent, and while he's worked to reform the notorious "earmarking" process where by members of Congress can set aside sums for pet projects, the age-old tradition has not been completely eliminated.

Republicans think Obey's decision to leave gives them a shot at a takeover. Our colleague, Fredreka Schouten, last week told you about the television appearances of one of the GOP candidates, Sean Duffy. You can check out the field of candidates for this seat, as well as Wisconsin's highly competitive Senate and House races, on USA TODAY's interactive election map.

Yes, and it needs to be retroactive to the point they abdicated their duties to the Executive Branch.

In reality…the current crop that is sitting there now needs to do like Obey and just go home.
