Paul Opposes Dream Act

Democrats have delayed a showdown vote on legislation that would give legal status to foreign-born youngsters brought to this country illegally.

Called the Dream Act, it grants hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children, a chance to gain legal status if they enroll in college or join the military.

It has already passed the House, but Republican Senator-Elect Rand Paul tells me that's as far as it will go.

"I think it's gonna have trouble getting through the Senate," said Paul, " and I won't vote for the Dream Act because there is a form of sort of amnesty within the act that, particularly if you say it's only going to minors, the minors' parents though then become accessible to U.S. citizenship. And it's not so much that they're not working or they're not being productive in our society, it's the easy citizenship thing that bothers us cuz many people waited in line at the border and filled out their paperwork to come to this country and we think that that's the way it oughta be."

Paul says he's intent on presenting a balanced budget proposal in his first month as a U.S. senator. He says he'll draw on the work of other fiscal conservatives to swiftly draft legislation once he's sworn in January 5.
