OKLAHOMA CITY – A broad tornado has blown through the Oklahoma City metropolitan area at the start of evening rush hour. State offices and a number of businesses let their workers go home hours earlier so they could be out of harm's way.

There were no immediate reports of significant injuries.

The tornado was on the ground for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon, giving forecasters plenty of time to warn residents. As it progressed eastward, it threatened Oklahoma City's northern neighborhoods and suburbs.

Interstate 40 was closed west of the city as the storm crossed the roadway near suburban El Reno, and state police were checking reports of damage at a home.

Deaths reported as twisters hit Oklahoma

    06:55 PM
    By Michael Winter, USA TODAY

CNN reports at least two tornados have touched down in Oklahoma, with one causing deaths near I-40 in El Reno and another heading for Oklahoma City.

A Canadian County Sheriff's deputy said the storm crossed I-40 had "claimed lives," while injuring motorists, destroying homes and causing a gas leak at an energy plant.

Medical examiner: 4 dead in Oklahoma tornadoes

    Updated 31m ago |

EL RENO, Okla. (AP) — Authorities say a series of tornadoes that rolled through Oklahoma City and its suburbs at rush hour have killed at least four people and critically injured at least three children.

    By Paul B. Southerland, AP
A half-mile-wide tornado hits the Oklahoma area on Tuesday.

The violent storms hit just two days after a massive tornado tore through the southwest Missouri town of Joplin, killing 122 in the deadliest single tornado to touch down since the National Weather Service began keeping official records in 1950.

The storms began about 3 p.m. in western Oklahoma and followed tracks greater than 40 miles into the state capital. State offices and many businesses let workers leave hours earlier to get out of harm's way.

Storms also raked the southern side of the city — in the same area hit May 3, 1999, by the strongest tornado ever recorded.
