California report reveals dropout rates for Class of 2010

About 1 out of 5 California students from the Class of 2010 dropped out of high school before graduation day, according to new state figures, with about one 1 in 6 dropping out in Santa Clara County.

But there was also some positive news in a report that usually dwells on the bad: Santa Clara County's push to get more students ready for college seems to be working.

Half of the county's graduates in 2010 had completed the courses required to enter UC or CSU schools -- compared with 34 percent of their fellow graduates across the state. The numbers are on the rise in the South Bay, even for groups who traditionally score lower, such as Latinos.

As before, county students outperformed their peers statewide,
but disparities among Silicon Valley's schools were stark. For example, 98.2 percent of Palo Alto Unified graduates completed the courses required by UC and CSU, whereas only 36.9 percent of Milpitas Unified and 32.5 percent of Gilroy Unified graduates did.

While only 1.7 percent of students from the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District dropped out before graduating in 2010, the county's second biggest district, East Side Union High, posted a dropout rate of 18 percent -- matching the statewide rate.

"Obviously, it's too high," East Side Superintendent Dan Moser said. The district is working on its credit-recovery programs to help ensure students stay in school, he said.

The graduation and dropout figures released Tuesday are considered the most reliable yet, because it's the first time the state has followed a class of students from freshman year through their high school careers, using individual identification numbers.

This year, the county posted a 16.8 percent dropout rate, and a 78.3 percent graduation rate. Last year, the county's class of 2009 posted a 16.1 percent dropout rate, and an 81.5 percent graduation rate. The two years aren't comparable, though, because previously published four-year dropout figures were based on less complete data.

Locally and statewide, the numbers show a persistent achievement gap, with 93.4 percent of Santa Clara County's Asian students graduating along with 60.5 percent of Latino students.

"We need to do a better job of serving all of our students," said Dr. Charles Weis, Santa Clara County superintendent of schools, in a written statement. "When they drop out, we not only have failed them, we have failed our entire community."

The four-year graduation rates for Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties were roughly the same or higher than the statewide average of 74 percent.

The Oakland school district, however, posted some of the worst numbers in the state: a four-year graduation rate of 53 percent and a dropout rate of 37 percent. For Latino students, the graduation rate was 47 percent.

"It's clear a tremendous amount of work needs to be done, and that high schools, in particular, need to be an area of focus of this district," said Troy Flint, a spokesman for Oakland schools.

Wonder what happens to the 40% of the hispanic students that don't graduate. Can you say "gang bangers"? How nice that the nortenos and surrenos have a constant flow of new recruits.

In addition, I wonder how much of our tax dollars have been spent to educate these drop outs?

I work in law enforcement in LA (I fortunately don’t live there). LA is a third world country, trash everywhere, graffiti, gangs (mostly Hispanic). I’m sick of illegals primarily Mexicans (I’m American of Mexican descent). These liberal politicians will not stop aid to illegals which costs this state 21 billion dollars a year, which is about the same as our current deficit. I earn a pretty decent income and my wife has a meager salary, but it seems to get more and more difficult to earn a living in this state. If I can make it to retirement, I’m probably going to leave this state.
