Big Brother arrives in different sizes

Big Brother, we’re learning, really is a collection of little brothers. One watches for those who ignore red lights on Kimberly Road and other high-traffic areas. Another watches for speeders on Brady Street. Still others listen to phone conversations between Americans and their friends and relatives overseas. Together, they can be seen as a disturbing trend toward automated, indiscriminate surveillance that subjects lawbreakers and abiders to the same government scrutiny. It makes us nervous, too, until we assess each of these little brothers separately. Some are scarier than others.
