July 8, 2006 -- A woman was sentenced to three to six years in prison for helping run an identity-fraud ring that supplied fake driver's licenses, Social Security cards and resident-alien IDs to thousands of people.

Maricruz Chavez, 31, of Queens, pleaded guilty last month to attempted enterprise corruption. She was sentenced on Thursday to three to six years in prison and made to forfeit $7,560.

Queens prosecutors said Chavez admitted to running the ring. The investigation has led to 17 other convictions.

More than 5,000 forged government-ID documents were seized, including 700 driver's licenses from 11 states, prosecutors said.

3-6 doesn't sound like much to me. Perhaps her time was cut for providing the prosecuters with the necessary information to bust others in the ring.

Instead of wasting 3-6 years at the expense of the taxpayers, how about just deporting her butt back home?

Seems that would be cheaper than keeping her in prison for "3 hots and a cot"

Oh no sippy, we can't do that! What is to stop her from immediately crossing back into the United States? It certainly isn't going to be our overburdened Border Patrol or weaponless National Guard.

She did the crime, so unfortunately she must do the time. Now, I'd be all for deporting her straight to a Mexican prison if such an agreement existed, but I'm afraid one doesn't. We can't deport criminals that would undoubtedly cross right back into the United States. We need a massive facility built on/or near the border to instutionalize those that have commited a criminal act worthy of a prison sentence. Furthermore, just releasing her back into Mexico will teach her absolutely nothing, but she won't hesitate to spread the word among her friends and associates - "it does pay to commit crimes in the USA."
