Store faces racism suit after hiring Hispanics

CHARLOTTE (AP) – A supermar*ket has been accused by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission of firing three workers who weren’t Hispanic.
The complaint was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court against Com*pare Foods. The complaint said the company fired three longtime em*ployees in 2004 – two black and one white – and hired Hispanic employ*ees to cater to its customer base.
“As our nation undergoes demo*graphic shifts, employers must be mindful not to target any specific group for discrimination because they prefer workers of a different race or nationality,” Lynette Barnes, the EEOC’s Charlotte regional attor*ney, said in a statement.
Compare officials couldn’t be reached for comment despite repeat*ed attempts.
The complaint said a black meat cut*ter’s hours were reduced to the point that he was forced to quit. The com*plaint also accused Compare of firing a meat wrapper and the market manager.
A complaint was filed in court after the EEOC couldn’t agree with Com*pare over back pay and damages for the employees.
