Farmers Branch Approves Immigration Resolution
(AP) FARMERS BRANCH Demonstrators upset with a Farmers Branch councilman's proposal to make it tougher for illegal immigrants to live in the city complained of a legacy of hatred while counter-protesters shouted their support for the councilman Tuesday night.

Protesters gathered as the City Council in this Dallas suburb met and unanimously passed a resolution that strongly urges the federal government to enforce immigration laws.

Before the meeting, shouts about a "legacy of hatred" rang out. Others chanted, "We support Tim O'Hare."

O'Hare has asked the council to consider an ordinance that would prohibit landlords from leasing to illegal immigrants, penalize businesses that employ undocumented workers, make English the city's official language, cease publication of any documents in Spanish and eliminate subsidies for illegal immigrants in the city's youth programs.

Some in the crowd cheered as O'Hare took his seat at the council meeting.

Carlos Quintanilla, a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens in Dallas, considered the passage of the resolution a victory in the face of the tougher proposal. But LULAC still expects a vote to be taken on O'Hare's proposal.
